If you want someone to get out on the dance floor and get people up and moving you might want to consider an MC.
For me, just a DJ was fine.

DO you think you need an MC with the DJ?
personally i think having a separate DJ and MC is the way to go. i don't want my DJ having to fuss with a cd, find the names to announce the BP, and pronounce them correctly while looking for the next one needs to play for when we come in. MC can help motivate the crowd a little while the DJ is working...and he can give the DJ cues on when to cut music or play something, in case the DJ is busy and the MC will be able to read the crowd a little better, since he won't be distracted like a DJ would be.

The MC can add structure to the wedding, let's people know when they should get ready to eat and when they should shake their but on the dance floor. Some people do not want announcements at the wedding and prefer to let the event flow naturally.
It depends on what you want.

In My Opinion
If you feel that your family may need a little lotivation to getting up on the dance floor... go with a DJ & MC!
If you know your family will be on the dance floor no matter what... just go with a DJ.
More often than not... if you just go with a DJ- he will still do announcements and what not during your ceremony.
For my wedding... I am getting a DJ & MC... my family loves to dance... but his needs a little boost lol

I liked having both a DJ and an MC, but I think a DJ himself is totally fine

Re: DJ or DJ/MC
My DJ will do all of the announcements. My crowd will be party people & don't need an MC telling them to get up. Plus, I am not doing any conga lines or line dances!

Re: DJ or DJ/MC
My DJ always brings a back up DJ with him so when he does the announcements and what not, there is someone else to do the music stuff. I am not getting an MC since most of my family will get up and dance without one.

Re: DJ or DJ/MC
At our wedding we did hire a DJ and a MC and we sure did not have any regrets.
