We are just getting started looking for DJs and we've heard in the past that they are usually around $3,000. Now we are getting quotes, though, for a lot lower (around $1,500 for the highest package with everything included). I guess I won't know about quality until I meet with each company, but in general, is $3,000 too high? Like everyone else, we are looking for quality at a reasonable price.
Thanks!

Re: DJ prices?
Ok, what does the big package include? This is what makes all the difference.
I saw so many DJ's and the prices were all very similar - until it came to plasmas as an option. One company wanted $1500 on top of the package to bring in 2 plasmas (um, NO!) and other companies seemed to be mostly $600-800 extra for the plasmas.
I think if you want just a DJ, MC, and lights you could find a lot of DJ's that will do it for $2000. If you want a live musical instrument ( percussion, sax, etc) expect to pay $500-700 additional for each. If you want plasmas, $600-800 seemed about right. Add in things like giveaways, that's extra. If you do a large package with all the options, they will usually give a discount.
We ended up with DJ, MC, Intelligent Lights, live musical instrument, GOBO, and plasmas because we got a great overall package from our company.
Obviously prices differ a lot, so this was just based on our experiences and about 7 DJ's (or more?).

Re: DJ prices?
What is included in your package?
We did not pay a lot for our DJ but we got just the basic package. I did not want any extras; I wanted just music, no tv's, no give-aways, no MC, nothing.

Re: DJ prices?
DJ packages all differ by DJ and by what you get.
You can get the basic dj for inexpensive, but it's all the extras that add to it. I ended with a great DJ who gave me dj, mc and plasmas and CH all for under $3,000. This place deals mostly in weddings and are great to work with and will sit down and ask you what your budget is because they don't want to oversell you or give you all this stuff outside your price range and have you feel pressured. If you are interested in checking them out, FM me.
Expect to pay extra though for favors and live musicians and plasmas and lights, etc....

Re: DJ prices?
I am getting a DJ/MC for under $1k.
Check out FM Entertainment...
I can't have funky lighting b/c of guests with siezure disorder, but some lighting is included.
It's a DJ... not like your having Dave Matthews perform live... $3k is very high IMO.

Re: DJ prices?
Ok...we went and met with our first dj today and we wound up with a total quote of $2500. This includes:
DJ and MC for cocktail hour and reception (5 hours) Intelligent light show (he actually showed us the set up and how everything would look) 2 plasma screens
We really liked the place and felt comfortable. Plus, we had seen them at another wedding and my friend recommended this particular dj to us. Plus they are one of two music vendors that our reception hall recommends, so they are very familar with the room we are having our reception in.
We really do want to book, but I know it's always best to shop around. I did get a few quotes from djs on liweddings, but it's hard to tell if the quality level is there just because they may have a lower starting price. I am so torn on what to do now!

Re: DJ prices?
We spent about $2300 for DJ and MC for CH and reception and 2 plasma screens. We weren't interested in any lights or anything. Hope that helps.

Re: DJ prices?
3k seems expensive to me for just a DJ. If you want add ons like plasma screens you should still be under 3k. I second checking out FM Entertainment.
