We're looking to book a DJ for our wedding in September and are trying to decide between Hank Lane and a friend's high school friend who works as a DJ. She's given him great reviews, so I'm sure he's great, but a friend of ours also works at Hank Lane and we know that they're supposed to be terrific. There's a price difference of about a thousand dollars between the two.
So who would you go with? And would you worry about things like finding a replacement if the non-Hank Lane guy got sick and wasn't working through his company?
Thanks for your help!

Re: DJ question....
Well, I'd ask your friend for a little more info. First and foremost, what kind of insurance does he have? This is required by all RHs so that's the most important.
Also, does he have back-up equipment in case something happens with his stuff? Is there a back-up person if, god forbid, something happens to him? Can you meet the back-up person before the big day?
If you're satisfied with the answers you get, save yourself the money and go with the non-company man!! If not, play it safe and go with Hank Lane. Good luck!

Re: DJ question....
We booked with More than Music which is part of Hank Lane. It was the only DJ we went to see. Saw them at a friends wedding and absolutely loved the DJ's work.
My vote would be for Hank Lane. Although it's more expensive, they're going to keep your crowd dancing on the floor the whole night. They just know alot from experience.

Re: DJ question....
umm for an eparty i'd go with the friend. But a wedding.. no way. He can be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but things happen. People get sick, equiptment doesn't work, equiptment gets forgotten, people get flat tires etc.
For an event like a wedding I'd go with a professional person.
Also realize, many RH's require the vendors to be insured. If he doesn't have insurance he can't set foot in the place.

Re: DJ question....
Thanks everyone! I know that the private DJ does have insurance, and he said he'd send pictures/videos by e-mail today but they never came. Do you know if his insurance would cover a replacement DJ or just if he burns the place down or something?

Re: DJ question....
The insurance is not for you, it's for him and his equipment and the RH, so only if he burns the place to the ground or someone throws his speaker in a lake or something like that. It won't cover you for a replacement DJ.
