FH and I are taking a little break from visiting vendors for a while -- one of our good friends is coming up from FL and we want to spend lots of time with him. Once he leaves, we are going to start looking for a DJ.
How do you pick one? What questions did you ask them? What did you expect from them when you went into their offices -- do they show video of their DJs at a wedding? What are giveaways and are they really necessary? Are you getting special lighting packages -- do you think they are necessary? Did you meet with any that also have live ceremony musicians?
Thanks ladies!

Re: DJ Questions
My FI and I met with Starlight Express on Saturday... First before you go you and your FI should decide what you want in a DJ...do you want a DJ and Emcee (the person who walk around getting everyone up ..but he is not necessary), Do you want lighting ? If so how much??? Do you want givaways???
Cocktail Music..Is that included??
My FI and I decided we wanted a DJ and Emcee who would keep the crowd dancing BUT would NOT BE in your face. I wanted no part of givaways. And there were certain songs that I want played and many song that I DO NOT WANT PLAYED.

Re: DJ Questions
Yes defiantly talk about what you want before you go. We thought that we wanted the same thing until we got there a realized we both wanted different things. We went with Apple Entertainment and I was very happy. I feel like we are getting a lot for our money.

I would definitely recommend seeing them perform at a bridal show before booking -- that's how me and FH knew without a doubt to book Tommy's Tunes. We were blown away by them!
When we met with them -- Tommy showed us videos of past weddings also. It was a personal choice for us not to have give-aways -- they weren't for us. But we did go for the supreme lighting package because we want a total party atmosphere. Do I think they are necessary? It all depends on what YOU want. For us, it was.
Also, we weren't going to have a CH singer, but once we heard Gene sing, we HAD to have him! He has amazing talent and I think it adds a nice touch.

Re: DJ Questions
Our DJ selection was the easiest vendor we booked so far... we only went to Tommy's tunes... and are very happy with that decision... so many of our friends have used them and I have never heard anything but great things about them... everyone says they are one of the best... and the fact that they played Jamie Discala's wedding confirmed that... we went and met with Joe... he showed us a video of them working with all the different options... they werent pushy at all... we arent getting all the bells and whisltes because we are on a budget, and we feel it just isnt necessary... so for a DJ & MC i think we are paying around $1795...
hope this helps!

We knew that we did not want a cheesy Dj who would play all the 'theme'songs (YMCA, electic slide, chicken dance, etc) We wanted someone who was more classy and who could offer us live music.
We asked them what kind of equipment they use. Something that I would not really care about, but FH is an audio engineer so he had to know.
We made sure that the name of the MC the WE CHOSE would be on the contract.
They showed us video of all the live musicians, plus the mc, and also played us CD's of some of the live music.
We did not want give aways (hawaiian leis, maraccas, plastic sunglasses, plastic guitars, etc.) or lighting.
