DJs- invisible and no giveaways!

Hi everyone- I can spend hours searching past postings, but I thought I'd ask this question anyway. I'm getting married at Lands End in Suffolk County and I'm looking for a DJ. I currently live in VA so it makes planning a little difficult, but not impossible because of all the help I'm getting on this website! Anyway, have any of you been to a wedding recently where there were no giveaways, the DJ played exactly what the bride and groom wanted, and you could barely tell the DJ was there? That's what I'm looking for. I don't want a DJ forcing anyone to dance or starting a conga line. I just want him to play music. Thanks for your help, Shannon

DJs- invisible and no giveaways!

I think that was my wedding! No giveaways, all the songs played, minimal MC`ing (except where necessary). I used Spin Around Sound, they have a website www.spinaroundsound.com We were very satisfied.

Elizabeth--

Should I ask for a specific person? Who was the DJ for your wedding? Sounds perfect! Thanks! If you don't mind me asking, what was the total cost?

Elizabeth--

Tom White is the owner and he was the DJ at our wedding. I have heard from other brides on this site that they were very happy with the other DJ, Anthony, as well. I think it was $1200 for 5 hours.

SAS and Parameters

$1200 sounds pretty low for Spin Around Sound. We met with them, and were quoted something in the $1600 range for 5 hours, but that was with giveaways and lights, so maybe that`s the $400 difference. We ended up booking Eddie Terryn with Parameters instead because we felt we clicked with him better. It`s hard for me to say with 100% confidence that he played every last song on our Must Play list because so much was going on that night, but I do know that he handled everything with such professionalism that night. Eddie made absolutely sure to get all the names right .. my new last name is not easy ... it was brutalized by another DJ at my brother-in-law`s wedding last summer. Eddie also did a tremendous job bringing out my brother and sister-in-law for a special 10-year-anniversary dedication we honored them with. He did not try to dominate, MCing only at points needed, and approached us many times through the night to check and make sure everything was okay. We did request giveaways, which people had fun with, we did have a conga line, which had a lot of people involved, and we did have lighting, which was absolutely subtle. But this was all at our request. Parameters, Eddie Terryn (516) 902-5310

Elizabeth--another question for you!

Our wedding was March 2001 and we booked them in April or May of 2000. The price was either $1200 or $1300 (I use to know everything to the penny!)

Spin Around Sound

I believe we are paying about $1400 for 4 hours. They do have different pricing depending on your needs. However, I think they start at about $1399.

DJs Unlimited

Hi- We booked with them a couple of months ago. We are getting 5 hours, a DJ/MC, no giveaways, and the basic lighting for about $1,400. If you don't want lighting, then it's about $100.00 less. You may even want to have just a DJ and no MC, which sounds like it could suit your needs. Then that is less too. They are a very professional company, with many people to choose from. We met with David, and we clicked with him right away - very personable. They have a website...I think it's www.djsunlimited.com Good luck and keep us posted...

Spin Around Sound

I just went to see them and are in process of booking them. This was the third DJ I went to see (I have a bunch of posts in the past week or so). If you call them they send you a basic package including pricing which I received within 2 days. They seem very professional and organized, which we liked. Plus I heard sooo much good stuff about them on this website. Tom asked us a bunch of questions on just our first meeting to really get to know us and our style. I want a DJ whose music gets people to dance and does not have to harrass my guests. I also want them to play our choic ein music. He made us feel very comfortable that he will grant our requests! The price was a little higher than the others I went to see but they seem worth it. It is a little over 1600 for a 5.5 hour affair basic lighting and I don't think any giveaways. If you want any additional info, let me know and I will post it or e-mail you. I think our second choice would have been Invitation to Dance. We liked the guy we met with but he would not have been available to do our affair and then we just wound up liking SAS a little better.

I was immediately very comfortable with Tom and he lives only a few blocks from Lands End!! He took down all types of notes on the type of music we like and even has onn our contract that my dad likes YMCA (don't ask...) If you have other questions, let me know

Big Hits Entertainment

Hi. Went to a wedding in Oct. where they were the DJ. Liked them so much that we booked them for our wedding without seeing anyone else. They didn`t pressure us for giveaways and they totally ask you what you want to play. The even will not play songs you don`t want. Very personalized, and the dj wasn`t obnoxious and annoying. 1-800-BIG-HITS. The owner`s name is Gerry. Highly recommend. They are in the 1500 range.

SAS or Tommy`s Tunes

We`re using SAS, and from what I`ve read and heard, they do exactly what you request - we`re not having any lights, giveaways, etc - we just want them to play music! My friend just used someone from Tommy`s Tunes, and he was great too - they`re also a little cheaper than SAS.

High Energy

We used High Energy Entertainment and paid $875.00 for both the DJ and MC for 5 hours. They played everything we asked for, did exactly what we wanted, which was to play music that you could talk over and people could dance to if they chose, and no giveaway's or crazy stuff. I don't have the number with me but if you are interested let me know and I will get it for you. Ralph sounds exactly like what you are looking for.

Spin Around Sound

I checked and we paid $1299 for 5 hours with no giveaways and minimal light. It was for 2 people, DJ/MC Tom) and assistant (Scott). But I booked 2 yrs ago so obviously my prices are outdated :o) For all the brides-to-be who have booked SAS, you will not be disappointed. I had a daytime wedding and heard that sometimes people don`t dance that much at daytime weddings. Our dance floor was always full. SAS played our requests and took a cue from the type of music on our play list and the stuff Tom chose complimented it well. Enjoy!!

Thank you everyone! 2 more questions . . .

You've all been so helpful! Two more questions- do I need a DJ AND an MC? Is it important to have lighting?

Personally, I don't think you need both IF you want them to be almost 'invisible'...if you want any audience interaction, then it's easier having a DJ and an MC. Good luck!

Yes, but if you are having your bridal party announced into the room to one song and then another song for the bride & groom, someone will need to be making the switchover of songs while the MC is announcing you into the room. Or if you are having your best man make a toast or anything else, there will need to be someone who is cueing him, handling him the mike/taking it back and someone else at the DJ area waiting to get the next song rolling. Same with the cake cutting, mother/son dance, etc. You want it to be seamless with the musical changes. Most weddings have some sort of MCing to cue up these events.

I appreciate your suggestions!

I definitely want my bridal party announced, etc. I just remember that at my best friend's wedding, the MC kept saying, 'You, at table #4, get up here on the dance floor . . . ' He made everyone who wasn't dancing feel guilty for sitting out a song or two! Thanks for your recommendations so that doesn't happen to me!
