DMV hassle, but done!!
I got married almost 2 months ago, but I took a slow work day today to go to the DMV office in Huntington today over my lunch hour to renew my license, and I figured while I was at it, I'd change my name on my license and registration too:)
Besides the fact my wait was over an hour, I just wanted to warn you all of the trouble I had. I kept my maiden name as my middle name. I did not hyphenate. I did my SS# name change as FirstName MaidenName MarriedLastName. No problems!! I also had no problems what-so-ever changing my name on my bank account, checking account, credit cards, payroll, any of the associated HR benefits, etc. That is until today at the DMV. I simply wanted the license to read FirstName MaidenInitial MarriedLastName. NO CAN DO. The woman said for me to do that I would need a court order officially changing my name. I had my marriage license and she said it doesn't matter. In the State of NY as it applies to DMV rules, you cannot legally change your middle name to your maiden name without a court order, so she said I had to keep my old middle initial or drop it completely. Or if I could produce 6 points worth of ID with my name that way (FirstName MaidenName MarriedLastName), then she could process it that way. My trouble was on my SS# card, I spelled out completely my maiden name as my middle name. However, all other documents (credit cards, bank account, payroll etc.) I only used the initial for my middle name (maiden). Since they didn't all match, she wouldn't process it.
In the end, after a few back and forth arguements, I completely took the middle initial off my license, and have thus completed the name change on everything - license, registration, insurance, title, etc.
So, just wanted to warn you all that you must be consistent in how you have your name appear, inparticular with the DMV. If you only use an initial for your middle name, be consistent. If you spell it out on your SS# card, you must have it spelled out for other purposes too.
Email me is you have specific questions on my dilema because I realize this may be confusing!!
