I just started getting allergy shots a few weeks ago, and I guess as they are getting stronger I am starting to see the side effects. On one arm (I need 3 in total, 2 in one arm, 1 in the other) where I got the shot turned black & blue. The other arm itches like crazy. Is this normal? I'm concerned because my wedding is only a few weeks and I don't want the symptoms to get worse... I can't have bruised arms in a strapless dress! But is it OK if I stop them for a few weeks or will it screw anything up?

Re: Do any of you get allergy shots?
Hi, I used to get allergy shots as a child so I don't know how much help I will be. The itchyness is fairly normal - after all they are injecting you with allergens so that your body eventually becomes immune to them. As far as stopping them, I don't see that as being a problem. After all, allergy shots go on for years so missing a few weeks or delaying for that matter shouldn't be too crucial. You may have to repeat a few dosages though. Definitly mention to your doctor first as every case is different. Hope this helps! Good LUck.

Re: Do any of you get allergy shots?
i get allergy shots every week. its a pain going but they are working. i haven't taken my medicine in a month. i get no side effects at all. doesn't itch or anything. they have been speeding up my doses so i finish earlier.
however, your side effects are common. happens to a lot of people & then they quit the shots. talk to your doctor & see if there is anything they can do (lower the dosage).
good luck!

Re: Do any of you get allergy shots?
I thought there were new shots that were much more effective and you didn't have to go for years? I've thought of getting them myself but used to get very bad reactions as a child when I went for them (I had to quit) My allergies are much better these days but my FH really wants a dog and I don't know if I could handle it. Do these shots really help for pet allergies? How long does it take? Sorry to get a little off topic.
I do think you may want to stop the shots for a few weeks. it's not worth the side effects at this time in your life. Ask your Dr. - I'm sure it's OK to stop for a while

i take a shot for cat allergies. so far they seem to be working. you need to commit a day every single week for over a year. i have skipped one or two though!

Re: Do any of you get allergy shots?
I was on them for 4 years and then stopped....but I got sick and had to go back on them...I am on them for over a year now. They work really well. The first time I was on them...I used to get fevers it was bad...but thats just my reaction.....I used to get sleepy also. Plus, your arm swells and itches...black and blue sometimes...especially if you jump when the nurse/doctor puts the needle in your arm. I can't see skipping a week or two to be a problem but you really have to ask your doctor about that...good luck!!!

Re: Do any of you get allergy shots?
I would talk to your doctor. I used to get allergy shots (2 in each arm) from about 6th grade through my freshman year of college. I don't need them anymore. They really worked!!! I do remember occasionally getting itching and swelling and going home and putting ice on it. I did get black and blue once or twice but I think that is when they hit a vessel. I don't think that should happen everytime. JMO.
