Fh and I are getting married at CLM, but we haven't found the officiant yet. I was wondering since we aren't getting married in the church, do we still have to take these classes?? and because we are getting married at CLM does our marriage still get recognized by the church?? Thanks, ~Kim

Re: Do I have to take PreCana??
No precana if you are not getting married in a Catholic church.
And no the Catholic church will not recognize a marriage outside of the church. I think???

You have to get married by the church in order for it to be recognized.. Otherwise..if you have aneveryday officiant..and get married at CLM...you can choose later to have your marriage 'convalidated' by the catholic church Which basically means you will have to go to a precana...get another certificate of some sort...and then they will recognize it......HTH

Re: Do I have to take PreCana??
We had a catholic ceremony by a priest at Flowerfield. We did not do pre-cana, but I wasnt against do it. As for it being recognized by church, I was assured that our marriage would be since we had a catholic ceremony.

Re: Do I have to take PreCana??
Ok my uncle is a priest so I have some information on the subject. Technically (the old way of thinking) is that if a marriage does not occur in the church then it is not recognized by the catholic church. However, the newer thing is that a marriage ceremony must take place inside a building (can't be outside in a gazebo or backyard etc) and be performed by a priest/deacon in order for it to be recognized by the catholic church. It really depends on the church though since my uncle believes that if you are not married in a catholic church then your marriage is not recognized. I know that Infant Jesus where I got married had someone go through Precana but they were getting married at the Miller Place Inn and since the ceremony was being performed indoors they were going to recognize the marriage.
Edited for spelling.

The priest at my church told me the same thing. I am not getting married in the church because FH is Jewish. We could have gotten married in the church but we wanted to get married on neutral ground. My priest and a rabbi are marrying us. Our marriage will be recognized by the Catholic church because the priest will be marrying us. Like Tracyd said, the ceremony can't be outside, it has to be inside. Also, we did have to take PreCana because we are being married by the priest and because the marriage will be recognized by the church so you still have to follow their regulations.

Re: Do I have to take PreCana??
The time to figure this out is when you hire the officiant. They will tell you what they require. If you don't agree, you can find a different officiant.

I had a friend whos daughter was in a similar delma. She got married by the church the night before here wedding day with just her parents and inlaws, then the next she had her wedding out side by a bridge at her reception hall.
