I had won mikasa crystal flutes from work, and was planning on using them, but MOH bought me the ones in my album because she found them on sale.....and my mom found me the cake serving set(also in my album) at The Christmastree Shops upstate for like $3.99. The set sells in Hallmark for like $30!!!!!! you can also get good deals on ebay. It's really up to you if you want them or not, but if it's for the right price, why not....

To answer the OP - no, you don't need em. I'm not getting a server set and my flutes are plastic Margarita glasses that FH bought for our engagement champagne b/c he thought they were 'pretty'. And they were on sale in Target.

i registered for them and got them

i want to use them in my china closet one day! and my cake cutting set i will use for holidays and stuff - i got my parents a similar one for their anniversary a few years ago and we use it for birthdays and holidays

of course, we are italian and take pictures cutting every single cake since birth - even if its Entenmanns! lol

eta: may as well register for ones that are reasonably priced and see if you get them!
