do i need a marriage license? special situation

I'm getting married overseas... and I don't know if I need a New York State marriage license or not! I assumed you only get it if you are actually marrying *in* New York State.

I know I need to file our foreign marriage certificate in NY when we return, so we are registered as married...

does anyone know or have a helpful link or phone # I can call to find out? Thanks!!!

I think Jessica (Sage) had to get married here in the US before she had the ceremony in Italy.

if you are getting married overseas, you don't need to get one from New York State. You only have to have one from the state of you are getting married here.

Yes I know she did... our ceremony is a different type than hers, though and completely legal & recognized! But thanks!!!!

Lori, what county are you in? My guess is to call that county office and ask them. I hope they'll know.

Or can you get in touch with the priest overseas and ask him? Maybe he will know too.

I read in a magazine once that you would have to get a marriage license for wherever you are getting married. Get married in Italy, get Italian license, in Ireland- get Irish license, etc. You may want to check with local authorities where you are getting married.
