I have no idea what I'm doing, but how hard can it be?
Anyone have any thoughts pro or cons regarding planners?

Hi there, I can only speak from experience...and tell you that I have not hired a planner and I have been enjoying the whole planning process...I personally could not imagine not being the one to plan it all

Re: Do I really need a wedding planner?
ok, im gonna be honest here....i'm not enjoying the wedding planning process all that much. i mean, sometimes it's fun, but it's really stressful. unfortunately, i don't have the kind of job where i can make calls during work or go online and even check my email...and i think that makes the planning process even harder. i would have loved to have a wedding planner....especially in the beginning when we were looking for rh's, but it is sooo not necessary. fh & i are planning the wedding all on our own....and this site has been incredibly helpful.

you don't need one. It is a luxury, and it would probably be great to have one, but you do not NEED one at all!

Re: Do I really need a wedding planner?
I've had friends that have done weddings with and without a planner. I guess it all depends on your schedule and level of involvement. One friend works crazy hours, so she had to hire a planner and also had a day of coordinator. She thinks it was money well spent.
I've had a majority of friend that have done it on their own and their weddings were just as well planned and amazing. figure out if you have the time to do the leg work, if so, save the money and spend it on your honeymoon!

Re: Do I really need a wedding planner?
depends.......
how crafty are you?
how well do you handle stress?
are you decisive?
do you change your mind a lot?
Do you have the budget for it?
I couldn't have paid anyone to do what I have done and felt comfortable with it. It seemed like a waste of money to me.
But then again, I like to handle myown business!

all you need is LIW! I've gotten most of my vendors and ideas from this site

You can totally do it without (as long as you have LIW) but if you have cash lying around, I'd do it! If I had any $, I would do it! Good luck!

Do you need one? Absolutely not! If you can schedule appts, make decisions and negotiate on your own then you dont need one. If you can handle taking things as they come-then definitely do it yourself.
However, I did have one and swear by her 100%. Things happened the day of that could not be foreseen prior to the wedding that she took care of. Kept me on a schedule and made sure that I was 100% happy with anything. She went over all my contracts with me to make sure I understood them and made sure that I never signed a contract unless I was ready.
People seem to be under the assumption that having a planner takes away your control and that is NOT true, I am a control freak and never had to give up control at all.
Either way, I think it is completely possible to plan yourself, if you want to have not a single worry that day I would at least hire a day of coordinator.

I have enjoyed planning this all by myself. I don't think every person is going to want that responsibility, so I can understand having a planner.

Re: Do I really need a wedding planner?
MrsK2008 and PegaLega brought up excellent points about planners.
Keep in mind that there are different levels of planning, too. You can hire one just to do a few hours of work on a specific vendor, contract review, day of coordination, etc. The planner needn't 'take over' planning if that's not what you want.

Re: Do I really need a wedding planner?
its definitely not a necessity. i personally didnt have one and didnt want or need one. i wanted my hand in all of the details, did a ton of DIY, etc. I liked that I was able to incorporate all of my own ideas. Not to say planners arent great for some brides. It just depends on how much time you have available to plan, your budget, size of your wedding, how much you want to be involved in the planning process, etc.

I love this stuff, so I am not having a wedding planner. None of my friends or family have used on either.

I completely agree. I think everyone at the beginning of their planning is a little lost and not sure what to do first. My advise is to get yourself a good bridal planner (one that gives you timelines, advise, tips and questions you should ask your vendors) and use LIW as much as possible! This is the best wedding planner! Good luck and happy planning!

Re: Do I really need a wedding planner?
I don't know if you necessarily need one.
I didn't have one, but I also work in the industry so I've been exposed to a lot of things that many other people aren't.
However, I would highly recommend having a DOC (Day Of Coordinator) to be there for you on that day, to deal with any situations that might come up, keep everything on time and organized, and just be there for stress relief as a whole.
