Do I register for china?
There are so many things we need that I don't know if its worth it to ask for china. What do you think?

The worst that can happen is that we dont get something we really need. I was thinking of just getting everyday plates that were a little nicer than casual. I dont know, i'm still not sold on having china.
I think you should register for what you want and it you want china go for it. Lets face it...your're probably never going to go out and buy your self really good china or waterford glasses or anything like that...so I say this is the time to get it.
To be honest, I am with you. We are anything but formal people and it is not likely I will use formal china, plus, FMIL is like this huge hostess lady and has china for like 50 that I am sure she will give to us. Regardless, if it is everyday dishes that you want then that is what I would get. My feeling is, don;t register for it just cause you can -- you have to make room for it in your home (and that is limited in a NYC apt) and if you move (as we are going to do) -- it is something else to break.
I was debating not registering for china either. I already have a set of somewhat nice dishes and we don't really ever have fancy dinners, but I decided that I wanted to get something that was 'ours' instead of something I already had. This way in the future when we do host nice dinners we will have something that we picked out together. I wasn't crazy about the traditional china that was in the stores, it all felt like something my mom or grandma had, but then I saw the Kate Spade collection. I registed for the Union Street collection. It is very nice and somewhat formal looking, but not old or stuffy looking.
Also, there are so many ways to get china at a discount now, on line thru homegoods and replacements and homeclick that with sales it is not the huge investment it used to be. Buying it via a dept store is with HUGE markups because dept stores make so much on bridal registry purchases (people will pay full price to get things off a registry)so I think the cost factor matters less now.
I would. There is a lot of really nice china out there that is not terribly expensive, like Pfalzgraf (d*mn, this is my second plug for them today. They ought to throw me some free stuff) but if you're hesitant, I wouldn't bother with formal stuff. I didn't, because I knew I wouldn't use it.
I had a problem when I was registering for things. We already have an apartment ready and waiting for us after we get married, the thing I was doing was registering for things that I would only need for my apartment. A friend told me that you should really register for some things that you will be using for your home when you finally buy and things for your china cabinet. So after all that I say register for your china. My FMIL bought us all of our china. If it was not for her I probably never would have bought it. I probably would have just bought an expensive pocketbook instead.
