Ok, so I need some other peoples opinions here. We are hoping to get married in August. It all depends on the location being available. We are on a very very limited budget. Face it, I live on the East End of LI!! lol Anyway, I found a dress online that I love...and my plan is to go find it at a bridal shop and see what I think. I found it online for only 250.00 - nice savings from my first pick which was 800.00. My MOH dress and my bridesmaid dresses are about 100 each. Our location is set on the beach and the cost for the day is 400.00. Found invitations for total cost of 175.00 with all that I need. Tricky part? or should I say trickiest?? The food and the music. With a background in cooking it makes me want to tackle at least 1/2 of the cooking myself. That way I know what I am serving and getting! Of course I would be having buffet otherwise I would look pretty silly all in my dress serving dinner!! Is this insane? I have access to get my meat at cost, so this would be saving me $$ but not time. I am also considering on doing my own cake... yes I am nuts and I am a workaholic who thinks she can do it all on her own. but I want the wedding of my dreams at a much much lesser cost than I have been quoted.
Has anyone else gone this far to make their day the way they want and be budget concious?

Re: Do it yourself wedding? - anyone else?
My DH's cousin had a beach DIY wedding. It was definitely under $5K but it was beautiful!! Her mom and sister cooked and set everything up, a family member made the cake, chairs and tables were brought in...it was really nice and simple. Yet she had flowers, BM's in coordinating dresses, GM's, etc. I loved her pictures! It may be a lot for you to execute everything the day of, so if you're thinking of going this route I would have as many people (family or a DOC) help you as possible...but it can definitely be done!
Good luck!
ETA: Some of my favorite reviews are of DIY brides. Definitely check out the Bride's Review board! maple_tea's wedding was gorgeous!

I think that's a lot of responsibility. My sister made the wedding cake for my brother's wedding and she said it was so much work that she would never do it again. She didn't get to enjoy any of the weekend.
If you want to do it, then enlist a bunch of people to help you. You can't do it alone.
Good luck!!!

I think you are taking on a lot of work, maybe you can just make your cake and have other family members help with the food. It is your day and you should be getting pampered and relaxed all day and have fun not worrying if you made the sauce the night before for the pasta I think you will be putting way 2 much stress on your self I say ask all for help
Good luck

it can be done, but i think it is alot of work if you cook the food. i did most of the cooking for my engagement party and i was so tired for the party that i didnt enjoy it b/c of all the work i put in that week for it.

Thanks so much for listening. I think I am going to have someone else make the cake and do 1/2 of the food myself. I can do a bunch of it in advance and freeze it at the walkin available to me. My family isn't really around to help, Mom is living in Tn and Dad? Well unless I plan on serving grilled steak with saute'd onions I am out of luck in that department! lol!
Still wondering if anyone else ordered their dress offline??

I just read a book called 'Wedding Etiquitte Hell' it was really pretty funny and had some good stories, but they mention a lot about not having enough food being a problem at buffet type things. We are splurging on some things, but refuse to spend a lot on others. I picked Tall Grass (Lessings) because the ballroom is NEW - everything is really nice, there's a bunch of drawbacks to the location (no where to really take pics, no real coctail hour place unless you rent a tent), but the prices are REALLY, REALLY reasonable, and all the chairs, curtains, carpet are new.

My girlfriend had her wedding there. I hope everything works out great for you!
We had a good time and everything seemed to go smooth for them.

I ordered my dress from netbride.com, which saved me several hundred dollars. I whole-heartedly recommend them!

Where is this location you are talking about? I would be very interested in finding out as I am on a very limited budget and would like to do an outdoor beach wedding. I would be greatful for contact information. Thanks!

Location is Founders Landing in Southold. But it is tricky. Unless you are a taxpayer in the park district (not town of) Southold it is pretty much off limits.
If you have a family member who lives there then you have an in. do a search for Founders Landing, Southold NY. I don't have the link handy.
