I'm from LI, but most of my college friends and the FH's family is from out of state. They all think we are crazy with the type of wedding we are having. I don't think we are overdoing it.
We are having it a Giorgio's which offers - an amazing cocktail hour -open bar 5 hrs (including martinis, frozen drinks, the works) - vienese, -a choice of 7 dinners and you pick one that night.
I guess elsewhere they don't have - open bar, sometime just for the cocktail hour - the cocktail hr does not have nearly as much food - dinner is usually a turkey dinner or a choice of three which you have to pick when you RSVP
It's just funny how different weddings can be. I don't even think I found any places that had packages w/o open bar.
I don't think it's over done here. Does anyone else?

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
weddings outside of the northeast area are nowhere near as 'grand' as the weddings here. I'm sure there are exceptions here and there (like the 600 person wedding for the 'run away bride' in GA). But for the most part, they are a fraction of what is done around here.

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
YEs - I'm expecting some of my friends from the midwest to be blown away. But even upstate - things are much simpler.... the cocktail hour for a wedding last summer was beer, wine and soda - then was a cahs bar after that. The food was cheese, crackers and some veggies. VERY simple - and I was a little startled. They also had you select your entre when you RSVP'd.
We're going to a wedding in Rochester this summer and we had to select our dinner also - so we'll see how the rest of the event is. I'll be sure to report back

I agree, I think New Yorkers for the most part spend alot more time and money on details compared to weddings in other states.

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
It suits me just fine, because I am from Long Island so I want nothing less than a Long Island wedding.
Most of my NJ cousins had their receptions in hotels. You had to choose beef or chicken for dinner on your response. My parents went to a wedding upstate where there was no choice for dinner- only pork and they served only wine, beer and soda.
Apparently out of state it is also a custom to show up at a wedding with a gift as opposed to a cash gift.

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
my cousins wedding was about two years ago in colorado it was different. however because they were origonally from ny they did have an open bar. it was kinda wierd though the ch was only passed horderves. then we had dinner then cake then they had there first dance. it was wierd we did everything before the dancing started at all. And yes they had a gift table. most people brought gifts.

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
To me LI weddings are how a wedding is done I grew up going to weddings like this and expected mine to be this way. I had a little culture shock the first time I was at a wedding without an open bar or just cheese and crackers at the cocktail hour. My friends from outside of NY and FI's family from the midwest will probably be blown away but no I don't think it is overdone!

The other thing I found different in many weddings outside of NY metro area was doing all the food, dances, toasts, etc all before any dancing could begin...I HATE that.

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
I have always been used to the LI/city wedding.... and for the first time I went to a wedding outside of LI and it was so different. It was in CT. The cocktail hour had 3 hot dishes, a small cold display and a few passed hordeuvres.
It was not super fancy, but it was a very nice time. We had to choose our entree when we sent RSVP...it was delicious...
Completely different,
I personally love the big weddings... fancy fancy fancy... it could get expensive, and there are some things that are not necessary, but I think LI truly knows how to do a wedding... its a once in a lifetime event!

So then you would HATE to be a guest at my wedding!
I think it's a cultural thing, because it's commonplace to do the dances/speches early on in my culture and then get the party started with no interruptions midway.

I don't think we overdo it, but we definitely do more than non tri-state weddings. Two of my friends from out of town experienced their first 'Long Island Wedding' last year and did not know what to do with themselves a t the CH. When we told them, there's still going to be dinner, they couldn't believe it.

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
FH's family is from upstate, and when he was telling them how much things cost (DJ, photgrapher, etc.), they thought we were crazy and spending too much money. He explained to them that is how it is on LI and I guess they have accepted it (not that they are paying for anything, so I am not sure what the issue was). It is a common misconception that people who are not from LI think that everyone from LI is rich.
We went to an upstate wedding last summer and it seemed so strange to me. CH was like someone said, some chesse and veggies. There was an open bar the whole night, which apparently was a HUGE deal!! Dinner was a buffet, which I don't really mind, but there wasn't much to choose from, and the food was COLD! Also I didn't really care for doing EVERYTHING before the dancing started, but that could be because I am not used to it being done that way.

I think you're right because in my culture its the same way, we get the cake cutting, toasts, slideshow, etc down first before anything else.

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
Yes, we completely overdo it!
I am getting married upstate, but being from LI, I was taken aback while booking upstate. Our wedding is at the Sagamore, very classy, but still, they do things differently.
While we aren't having cheese and crackers, the cocktail is nowhere near as extravagant as LI, which is kinda growing on me now anyway. Mostly I never eat my entree here!
The bar is open for 4 instead of 5 hours, and I am billed for the last hour, so there's no break and no one knows except FI and our parents.
As far as choices, we decided on surf and turf anyway, so I don't know if they make us RSVP with the choice, but I don't think so.
Anyway, it is VERY different, and when I spoke with my coordinator, she told me she went to a wedding above Westchester and was floored. I told her to go to a wedding on LI, it's an experience like no other!

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
The FH's parents were blown away by the prices and the places. I guess elsewhere they don't have catering halls like LI does. After they got use to the idea they think that the package we got was really reasonable, but they were expecting $35-45 per head. I laughed and thought in my head (what are we eating at McDonalds!)

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
I have friends getting married in Albany this summer that are not having any alcohol at all(she's mormon). They are having a local newspaper photographer shoot their wedding (he works for the paper), and her friend is going to be the DJ. They can't believe how much everything down here costs - oh and did I mention their house, which they bought last year on almost an acre of land - cost only 85k. They do keep reminding us though that they don't make as much as they think we do.

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
Of course we do!!! But that is what makes us so unique! LOL!!
A lot of my family is from PA. While their weddings were unique for them, they don't understand why ones here are so 'Elaborate'. I know they roll their eyes at it, and mine is just your run of the mill wedding, nothing too fancy. But to them i know they'll be floored.
Its not a snobby thing, just the way things are done here for the most part. Its one day of your whole life so why not live it up right? lol...

I don't think we over do it, Southern Weddings and California Weddings can be just as over the top, sometimes more so. Have you ever check out some of the weddings on the knot? lol

Re: Do LI Brides over do it?
I know a lot of my friends will be impressed since they've never been to LI for a wedding.
My FFIL family is going to be super impressed because they are from Canada. They have huge 400 people weddings there and serve CHIPS and BEER!!! 3 years ago one cousin got married and they made it elaborate by ordering heros! The guests were so impressed with heros, they may faint when they come to mine!
