When a person first calls in to get phone service. They ask for your social security number. People usually give it. You DO NOT HAVE TO.

I just saw some serious lack of privacy on social security numbers that really irritated me.

no one over the phone should get that info from you.
Also if your bank happens to call and ask your account # DONT give it to them. This happened to someone I know.
Duh...why would the bank ask for your # if they already have it.

My DH works for Verizon and told me it is required to get new service on a cell phone (not sure about a landline). The reason is they run a credit report (by using your SS#) to check your credit history. My BIL called a few months ago when he was getting a new phone. He asked my husband this same question. Apparently, he had just hung up with the phone co. who refused to give him service since he would not give his SS# to them.

You don't have to give it to them. You just have to pay a deposit to get service.

I am just so sick of all these companies wanting our info and they are so careless with it.
