Do-Nothing Co-Workers: If you have them...

Do-Nothing Co-Workers: If you have them...

do they

a) help motivate you to work harder so you can REALLY show them up

or

b) help you justify slacking off?

I used to be 'a' but I am becoming 'b'. I am just sick of it.

We work too closely together for me to ignore the behavior.

I am always paranoid that my co workers think I do nothing - so whenever I have a lot of work to do - I make it a point to do it and that way they can see that I'm not just sitting at my desk surfing the web....
oh, wait - um - ha ha, today's an exception to that rule becasue I'm not busy - I swear!

I think in the beginning, it's A.) but after a while, i tend to get annoyed that I am busting my butt, while others do nada. I used to work in schools, and in those jobs it was always that I worked hard, because it was the students that would suffer if I didn't. Now, in office type situations, I always do enough to do my job, but have toned it down a bit.

I also think sometimes, the harder you work, the more work you get. I think bosses know when you are competant, you'll get it done, so sometimes the slackers get even less work assigned to them because they aren't trusted to do a good job. It is sad....

He's new so B - justifies the slacking. But that's only because the boss is VERY accepting of his slacking.

I too used to work my butt off cuz I didn't want anyone thinking I was a slacking off until one day I found that people were shopping all day on the internet. Now I just hang out on the web during the day except when it's really busy of course or if the boss is away.

Yes, this is my issue too. I am asked to do more because they know I will do it. And I won't complain about it either.

unfortunately this is completely true. the slackers get assigned less work b/c they either can't or don't do the work. the employees who do a good job are assigned more work b/c they are capable of doing so. i am a manager and am guilty of this practice. i usually try to help out my staff members who i assign more work to. it stinks but when you need stuff to get done, you don't care how it gets done!

The problem here is that they don't get punished or disciplined for doing nothing, and I wind up doing their work in addition to my own when people take two hour lunches to get mani/pedis and a massage! I just had this conversation with my boss yesterday, and let her know how disheartening it is to work harder and not get rewarded while those who do nothing are not punished.
