FH has a tux he bought earlier this year, and only wore once. Can he wear that and have the GM rent theirs, or do they have to be the exact same tuxes?

I dont think its a big deal... I think the groom should look a little different.

I think it's okay since it's the groom- anybody else I'd say they have to match exactly.

FH just bought a new tux for the wedding and he doesn't match the groomsmen. I think it's actually nicer for him to stand out a little and I definitely don't think it detracts from anything! If he likes the tux he has I'd absolutely say to wear it!

Re: Do tuxes need to match exactly?
DH was in a wedding party prior to our wedding. There were about 7 GMs and about 4 of them refused to pay the almost $200 for a rental (including DH). So instead the 4 of them went to Karakos and purchased their own tuxes for about $90.
You could not tell the difference whatsoever. As long as they are a similar style, its no big deal.
PS - DH used the same tux for our wedding and his 2 GMs just had to purchase a similar one from Karakos and we called it a day.

I's a big misconception that tuxes need to match. The truth is that none of the tuxes need to match, even for the groomsmen. However, I can see the desire to have the groomsmen match.
Certain types of tuxes and details are considered, and look, more formal than others. I would say to make sure the groom always has a level of formality equal to or greater than his groomsmen and the fathers of the bride/groom.
If you need help with the different black tie options, and the levels of formality, see the box entitled 'Formalities' on the left side of:
