I absolutely agree. Really, the voters in a few states are the one deciding the election -- our votes don't count.

It shouldn't be that way, you can see just by reading these boards how varied our opinions are -- our votes are not the same as our neighbors and they shouldn't be counted that way.

I agree! I don't think the electoral system is fair. It really discouraged voters and creats apathy. Whether or not I vote, Kerry will win NY. I wonder if that would change if there were no electorla college and that weren't the case, would more republicans vote b/c then they'd feel their votes would eb counted? ould more Dems vote to tyr to sway the election on a national scale> its interesting.

Its a fair system. Electors are delegated to states based on their population. If every state was given the same amount of votes... then it wouldn't be fair.

And if it wasn't a fair system... don't you think it would have been revamped in its 200+ years of existance?

2000 wasn't the first time the popular vote exceeded the electoral vote. If people thought it wasn't fair... they would have changed it then.

And if you don't think your vote counts (because a state always votes a certain way)... i have one answer for you.

How do you think Minnesota elected a freakin WRESTLER as their governor!!!??? Cause people went out and voted.

There have been attempts to change it, unfortunately they've not been too successful. It has been an on & off issue in both houses since the early 1900's.

Local voting is very different than voting in a presidential election, but this is a great testament to what can be done if thrings of people go out to vote

Exactly... and in the end... the MAJORITY felt that the system was fine.

I got news for you, this wrestler is thinking about running for President in 2008.

not necessarily....most of the time the economy or a war became a more time sensitive issue & the electoral system (and the committe) was placed on the back burner.

The system is far from perfect & that is not a secret. The problem is the committee to 'revamp' is considered an ad-hoc committee and can be drawn to a more pressing issue, such as war or a market crash, etc.

It also takes a lot of pressure from the constituents of the local reps/congress persons to make it a more pressing issue among the voters themselves.

I really don't understand why we even need the electoral college. If it were a fair system then it would reflect th emajority, if it reflects the majority, then we don't need it. I'm not history buff, but I really don't get it.

Personally I don't see why my vote in NY should count more then somebody in Kentucky. So I don't think it's fair.

But we're not talking about giving the states the same amount of votes. It's about giving individuals the same amount of votes.

And there has been many attempts to change the electoral college. They just have done it yet. Hopefully they will in time.

Just because something has had a long existence does not mean that it is the best choice. Slavery, women being considered property, keeping blacks and minorities separate were all long standing American traditions, but I would hope that we can all agree that they were not fair.

The electoral system needs to be overhauled. We as citizens should not feel that our vote in who governs our country does not count. I don't know about you guys, but I was taught that in a Democracy the majority was suppose to win. Popular vote should decide the winner. JMHO
