When FH and I went to pick out my setting for my Engagment ring, I said wanted white gold.. but...now I've been seeing Platinum, and it makes my Diamond sparkle even more, and just looks better on my finger....and I want a platinum wedding band.. but is it rude to tell FH that I want to get a platinum setting??? Does it sound like I don't like my ring?? becuause I love my ring..

I am allergic to gold so have to platinum. I didn't think there was that much of a difference between the two? Not sure though.

I dont think it is rude - i am sure your FH wont get offended at all - your engagement ring is something that you will have for the rest of your life - i am sure he will want you to be happy with the decision -
I only had two requests when FH was getting my ring - that It be a round diamond and it be platinum band - so i obviously didnt think it was rude

A family friend is a jeweler and he told me that he is advising couples to go with the white gold now adays because it is less expensive and platinum is very soft and can easily scratch.
I wanted platinum at first also and I can honestly tell you when it comes down to it, does it really matter that much? I mean, you are planning a wedding and trying to save money ( I am assuming!)
JMO but I would hold off...you could always upgrade later on.

I dont think it's rude - if you are involved with picking the setting he will want your honest opinion.
ETS - plat is a very durable metal, even though it scratches you retain the metal. It moves around and not flake off. It can very easily be buffed to be like new.

I had the same two requests when FH asked what I wanted in a ring: platinum & a round diamond. But if he had gotten me gold with a princess cut diamond, I still wouldn't have changed it for the world. I would've been happy with a ring pop. That's me. I also don't believe in picking out the ring together before you get engaged. Again that's me. BUT, since you guys did pick out the ring together and the difference between platinum and white gold is not that big (meaning it's not like you are changing the entire style of the ring -- just the material of the band) I don't think it's that big a deal. I don't think he would be offended and I don't think he'd find it rude. Good luck!
ETA: BTW, platinum DOES scratch easily

Also keep in mind that if you get a white gold band, you may be able to get a better quality center stone. I have a platinum e-ring and wedding band and I LOVE them, however, we realized after the fact, that if we had gone with white gold, my DH may have been able to get a slightly larger center stone.
God that sounded so stuck up! It doesn't matter...lol!

As far as the sparkle, white gold maintains the 'sparkle' more than platinum. I have a platinum Ering (it really isn't that dull yet after only a year) but I know a lot of other people have platinum as well and theirs are dull (they can be buffed). In a way though, if the metal is dull the diamond looks that much better!!

I have a white gold setting...and it was dipped in platinum. White gold was less expensive...so FH was able to spend more on the diamond. I love it...it sparkles just fine. A girl at work has a very similar ering and we always compare...hers is platinum.

Thanks girls.. I do love my e-ring.. it's absolutely perfect.. It's more than I had ever dreamed of.. I just heard that platinum lasted longer.. but if that's not the case then I'm keepin my white gold.. I didn't even know the difference until I saw it the other night.. thanks

Platinum IS more durable - when white gold scratches, you actually lose gold. When platinum scratches, the gold just moves with the dent and it does not wear away like gold does. A few jewelers have said the same thing . . . other than that I really see no difference.

Maybe you can ask him to change it for an anniversary. That way you have time to think about it, and its more of an upgrade, than a change. In the meantime, iI don't think it would look out of place with a platinum band.
Some people upgrade the diamond down the line. Same thing, right?

I don't think it's rude, I am sure your FH will want to do for you what makes you happy anyways.
