Do you have to set goals at work?

Do you have to set goals at work?

The beginning of each year we have to make 4 or 5 goals for ourselves for the year. Well this year I did not meet my goals. So I guess I have spent way to much time on LIW.

Anyway I get to have a lovely 1 on 1 meeting with my supervisor tomorrow & I know I am going to hear all about it. While on the surface I don't care deep down I do.

I hate working for big Corps. You are just a # to them. Unless you are on the 'lead' team' no matter how hard you work or don't work we get the same crappy raise. We will be lucky if we get 2%. I have to admit that I have slacked of this year. Partly b/c I don't want to do this anymore and partly b/c no one gives a crap how hard you work. They want more more more and you get no thanks. You only hear from them if you don't do something.

Anyway not sure where I was going with this but thanks for letting me vent.

I am in a similar situation. The goals thign is new for this year., but there are things fromt this past year, that are realy more, just routine things plus some vague, new projects, that arne't done.

I think a lot of this is goig to coem to light soon. I have already been told that next year's goals will be more finite & checked.

Every year during our reviews we have to set new goals. If you ask me its really cheesy and the reviews don't reflect the employee because its so broad based. Besides we don't get raises based on merit. We get our 'standard of living' raise which use to be 3% and is now 2% Yeah, that pathetic extra 25 cents an hour really reflects the standard of living!

We have goals to set every year as part of our performace evaluation.

BUT...

the eval is not tied to your raise. We all get the same crappy raise So I always meet my goals, while the person next to me slacks off, and we get the same raise. It makes me nuts.

Also, I kind of think goals are BS. It's like 'Do your job, PLUS do these extra things that we're adding to your job' At least that's how it is where I work.

It was very cut and dry. They have to come up with a performance plan for me so that I do a better job. He didn't ask me if I actually wanted to do the job.

So it didn't go well as I knew it wouldn't. I just smiled and said I would work harder.
