No - you don't have to take e-pics. We didn't do it. If it's included in your package though, you might as well.
It's mainly to get a feel of the photographer before the wedding day and get comfortable with him/her and with taking pics. Also to see what their work is like with you.
eta - many people use their epics to create sign-in books or to put up pics at the reception.

It's your wedding, you don't have to do anything.
yeah, to make sure you dig the photographer, to have some fun, possibly casual wedding pics and so forth- those are the reasons I can think of...

I did not want to take any but then had to so we can have everyone sign the the pic for our e party. Even though your photographer says its included usually the framing is not.
