Do you keep your pets crated during the day?

Do you keep your pets crated during the day?

I am having serious guilt issues here about keeping Casey in the crate all day while we are at work. I mean, she is too young to be left loose - she will chew everything, but i feel really guilty. And I read somewhere that when she is about 2 yrs old, we will be able to leave her loose. We are building a fence in the yard so at least she will have somewhere to run but for now I feel like a bad mommy and i even thought maybe she deserves better

do you guys keep your (BIG) dogs in a crate during the day? I am really torn up over this.

We keep Pastina in the kitchen. Her crate is there, with the door open. Her bed is in the crate, so she sleeps in that when she wants to.

Our cabinets are all fake wood (actually a THICK plastic, so there's really not much damage that she could do)

We are having the same problem..Martin is 2 and we have crated him because he bites up paper and stuff (not furniture). After the HM we started having out but he started again (AFTER 2 months of being out full time!).
We have no choice! I do feel guilty but until he learns, i don't know what else to do

we did up until about 1 month ago....Bailey will be 3 this month and we started out by keping her out at small intervals at a time.

We felt no guilt in leaving her in her crate when we went to work because it kept her out of trouble and kept our apt. neat and tidy.

Nope.

Both dogs have free range of the house. They dont do any damage at all. Once in a blue moon if Lukin thinks we've been gone too long he'll go in the garbage, but not too bad even.

I dont even have to crate the last pup! But, we have been locking all three dogs in the kitchen since the pup doesnt get crated. They can only be in the kitchen or bathroom. No problems so far! This pup is awesome. He doesnt chew anything.... yet!

We've crated our dog since we got her. She'll be a year old next month. She gets spiteful so that's why we have to crate her. She knows when it's time to go in.

No - we had Asia crated until she was about 5 months...the crate was in the kitchen (tile floor) and we gated her in. We gradually would let her stay 'out'. Maybe just 15 minutes, then 30, etc... she was never a chewer so we weren't THAT worried. Now she is 10 months and we let her have the kitchen (crate door still open) and the living room and she's fine. We leave her like that whenever we go out and also at night when we sleep. Generally she ends up in the crate anyway on her own

We keep Rudy in a smaller room with a baby gate up. He has his Kennel-Cab in there (which he loves to sleep in) and all his toys. So pretty much we keep him in a small bedroom during the day.

Nope as a puppy we had him gated in the kitchen but once he was housebroken we let him have free run plus husband goes home for lunch everyday to let him out!!

Is there any way you can Casey Proof the room she is usually in and leave her in there? Start off doing it while you are home- and check on her every 30 minutes.. this way it gives her a little more room.

Re: Do you keep your pets crated during the day?

Nope ... our dogs are either sleeping on my bed or the living room furniture!!!

I believe when Bailey ( thegolden) was a puupy, Tim kept him confined in what we call the playroom (it was once the garage that was converted into a lovely 1970's wood panelled room with kinda industrial floor tile). I think when he was really small he was confined to a small corner of the room.

When I first got Hershey, I didn't confine her and came home to magazines, mail, couch cushions, dog beds, comforters ... you name it, chewed up. So I started to keep her behind a baby gate in half of my apartment. The chewing stopped once she became comfortable with me and realizing that I *did* come back eventually when I left.

We keep Golem crated while we are at work or out of the house. He is too young right now to be left unattended with free run of the house. He's also teething, so anything in his path is fair game as a chew toy! The crate is our way of protecting him while we're not there to keep an eye on him. Letting him loose in the house unattended is just too much responsibility, and he is not ready for that priviledge yet. He's in the crate while we're at work, whenever we leave the house, and during the night while we're sleeping. Crate training is also a HUGE help in housebreaking! Golem hasn't had an accident in almost 3 weeks now! :)

We're planning on keeping this crate schedule until he's out of the puppy/adolescence stage, until he's 2 years old maybe. it all depends on the dog though. Golem actually likes his crate now - dogs are den animals, and he's just now starting to realize that the crate is his little comfort zone that's his and his alone. He's been taking his toys in there to play lately, so I don't feel as bad about leaving him crated as I used to at first! What makes me feel better about it too is thinking of the trouble and possible harm he could get into if left to run the house during the day...... He is curious about everything, and if left alone it's very likely that he could get himself hurt just by wanting to explore (what are these wires back here?) Crating is the best thing you can do for your puppy, I really believe that now. It's hard at first - but keep in mind that a puppy doesn't KNOW yet what is harmful and what is not. So it's up to us as their owner to look out for them until they can do it on their own. The crate is vital in this, so don't feel so bad about keeping Casey in there ;) As long as he's getting enough playime and time with you outside the crate, he'll eventually grow to like his crate and want to be in there :) And you'll feel better knowing that your puppy likes his crate, and feels safe and happy there :) Keep up the good work!

We only crated brownie for about 3 months, then we kept her in my room, the only damage she did was probably chew up the door a little but thats about it. She just turned two and she has free run of the house...doesn't touch anything MOST of the time. I woulid say 99.9 percent of the time, but if we leave something new out, she might play with it....

Loki is in the crate during the day. Luckily Will gets home at 4, and I leave for work at 8:30 ish, so it is not too long, but he is chewing everything & I am very afraid that he will eat something that can hurt him.

Also, his head fits through the bars in the pet gate, so that's not an option

LOLOLOL....when I saw your avatar pic I started laughing...I have a lab too...They cause havoc! Mine is crated from 9-4. Except when the weather is nice I keep her outdoors when I'm not home. Otherwise she would eat me out of house and home.
