Do you need a passport to go to Canada?

I know that before 9/11 you didn't need one, do you need one now?
I think just a birth cert. is okay but not sure.

Yes your birth certificate is just fine to go to Canada.

I think maybe even a driver's license is enough.

Im from northern NY and it kinda depends on where you are crossing. You deffinately wont need a passport, but a birthcert. maybe. Niagara falls is a little more strict than Thousand Island Bridge. Probably because they get a lot more short term traffic. Thousand Island Bridge probably wont even ask to see any identification, they just have a list of questions that they have to ask. And as long as you are truthful and dont arouse any suspicion, no problem.

They didn't even look at our id's when we went to Niagra falls (that was also years ago). I brought my Passport anyway!! you never know... sometimes they feel like busting balls.

Actually, we'll be crossing the border out by Seattle. We're going to Seattle and then Vancouver/Victoria for our honeymoon.

My husband is from Canada and we never need anything more than our driver's license...before and after 9/11. We always cross through Maine.

I have heard that pretty soon you are going to need a passport to get in any other country. I don't know when this is suppose to start, or if it is actually going to happen.

My husband and I went to Canada for our honeymoon and we were told to bring 2 pieces of ID, either passport and driver's license , or birth certificate and driver's license. We took 81 and crossed into Canada there and we were asked for both of them when we crossed. We were also asked for both when we crossed back into the US in New Hampshire. Of course we were married less than 2 weeks after 9/11 so it may have been different then.

I used to go to Canada a lot when I was in college (early '90s) and we crossed at Niagara Falls. Once I had just a driver's license and was given a hard time getting back into the U.S. because I was told that it was not proof of citizenship. I had to get out of the car and was questioned for about 5 minutes. Since then, I always carried my birth ceritficate (for proof of citizenship) and a driver's license (picture ID) to cross the border. I remember it was harder to get into the U.S. than it was to get into Canada in the early 1990's, so I imagine it's still the same way since 9/11.

We were in Canada on our honeymoon and they were pretty strict b/c of 911 but we got through with birth certifcates.

We went on a cruise this past summer, and we needed our passport and our drivers license to go into Canada and to get back on the ship.
