You don't have to unless you are on a holiday weekend...I am sending them bc we have tons of OOT guests that don't really know what is going on...Plus I designed mine myself & thought they were very cute!

We are probably going to send them out only b/c we're getting married Thanksgiving weekend and we want to let people know in case they're planning on going out of town. I don't think it's necessary I've never gotten one.

Our wedding isnt on a Holiday, but we have lots of out of town guests. I suppose I should do them.

We are still undecided about this. We may do it, but if not, most of our guests already know the date of the wedding.

My wedding is not on a holiday weekend but I am going to send them out anyway. I have a few people coming from oot but they have family to stay with. I am going to make them myself.

We are not getting married on a holiday weekend, but we are getting married in the summer (a time when a lot of people take vacations), so we are going to send them out, probably 7-8 months before (along with hotel information).
Kristen, I'd love to see the STD's you designed. Post a pic!!!

I'm not doing them - most everyone knows the date already. Since we're getting married in May, I may include something when I send out my holiday cards - but nothing formal planned.

I am definetely doing them...this is an important day and I don't want people to forget the day THAT I AM GETTING MARRIED I will probably send a magnet at Christmas time

we are thinking about it too... still undecided- we are getting married on a holiday weekend in july- so we want people to plan- then again everyone we really really want there will know the date anyway-- oh well

Although they are not necessary we are doing it as we have a lot of OOT guests and want them to make vacation arrangements well in advance.

Before I started planning my wedding I always thought STDs were a little silly -- you get the invitation in enough time, and if you can't come you can't come, while close friends and relatives will prob. know the date beforehand. BUT, I now think it is a good idea if you have OOT guests or are having it at a time when a lot of people will be traveling and if it's a good idea for them to make travel/hotel arrangements early.
I am planning to make mine brochure style with a list of hotels/inns/motels and a note to make arrangements early. Plus, since people can make a weekend out of their trip I am going to list things to do, local restaurants and maybe even places to get their hair/nails done if they want to do that before the wedding. It's a lot easier to do this than sending all that info with the invite, or for computer-challenged people who won't look at a Web site.

You defintiely don't have to. I've only gotten them for about 1/2 of the weddings I've been to. if it's a holiday weekend or if you have a lot of OOT guests, or if it's a sunday or friday (people wold need to take off form work) I think you should. We're sending them out a year in advance because we have a lot of OOT guests and it's only a littlre more than a week before christmas...so i'm sending them out with this year's holiday cards! but if your wedding is on a satuday, not a holiday and you hae more people in town, you don't need to.
but it gives people time to get off from work and make hotel arrangements. You could also just make a wedding website with the same info (hotels, etc) and just email it to the pertinent people who would be coming from OOT

I was unsure myself but I decided on sending them out because one of my FI cousins just got engaged (FI is not too close to him) and I want to make sure FI relatives remember our wedding. Plus I am getting married on a Friday.

i think save the dates is a great idea, especially if you have out of town guests like i do. i am also having it in june, and people plan summer trips too. and they are pretty inexpensive.

thanks for all of your input...I think we are going to do them. BUT I think we are going to make them. We made our engagement announcements and they came out really nice, so I think we can pull off making the STD cards.
