Do you regret having a wedding over buying

a house??? The old folks in our families thinks we are crazy to have a wedding over a house.. but a house is a serious commitment and we have seen great people we know lose their houses....

Do you regret having a wedding over buying a house???

YES!!!!

ETA if it were up to me, we would have something really small and buy a house immediately. I hate this big wedding!

I budgeted really well for the wedding, so in no way do I regret the money I have spent for it.

no, not one bit. I've always wanted a nice wedding and FH feels the same way. Its a once in a lifetime event and it should be special

we'll buy a house eventually. Yes, I want to own something and think its very impt, but I also feel that the wedding is a day you'll cherish forever

i guess part of why I don't really feel bad about it is that we're saving for a house as well so its not like all our money is going towards the wedding and nothing towards a house fund...

We are on a waaay tight budget. I wanted a tiny wedding with all of our family out to dinner, but then FH wanted a big party with everyone after the fact anyways....so we just stayed on a tight budget, chose the afternoon, and probably only spent a few grand more than if we did it the original way.

Ou parents basically gave us the money that we are using towards the wedding. We have not asked for anything more. And we are paying for the HM- a trip that we would have taken anyway!

Crashing bc this exact question has been torturing fh and I. I know a place to live and raise a family is more important but the wedding only happens once. Both are important the problem is finding the financial balance of how much to spend on each. My mom says its sad bc when my parents got married you could invite many people for a less amount and parents could afford to pay for it themselves and the gifts you received gave you the nest egg to start with. That's not the case anymore and its a really hard to figure out what's the right thing to do.

No way! We will have a nice amount from the wedding. Plus I started working at Starbucks when I was 17 and moved up to store manager. I put 25% of my pay into a 401k and the first few years they matched the first 10 % until the economy went to sh*t. but still. 6 years of putting 25% of your pay in a 401 k reallllly helped, plus I still do it now. You can take a loan out for your first house with out fee so we will probably use that and our wedding money for a big down payment after the wedding!

FH and I bought an apartment almost 2 months ago - keeping in mind that we also wanted to get married in 2011. We knew that first we wanted to save to buy the apartment because it was really important to us and we wanted to really be settled in, and then based on that, we also had a budget of what we could save for the wedding in time. We wanted a small intimate wedding all along (~70 people), so that's helped w/ the budget. We've been very realistic with what we can afford along the way, which is really helpful - and are trying to save money along the way as much as possible knowing all of our other expenses. I'm hoping that by the wedding, we'd saved enough to pay off everyone and also the honeymoon which has definitely been the biggest splurge.

Goodluck to you ladies looking to purchase after the wedding! It's an extremely exciting thing!

Nope I sure don't you only get married once hopefully and you deserve to have the wedding that you want. I get that same message from my father's side of the family and am so tired of hearing it. I kind of wish i would have went away and not invited any of them. When I am ready to get a house I will but I don't regret it at all.

Buying a home is a financial investment. It’s the best time to buy a home now. You’ll probably get an excellent return on your investment.

We did everything backwards. We moved in together, got dogs, purchased a home, made major improvements, and now we are making it official. Everyone has their own views, I would do what you think is right. If it was me, I would purchase a house. As long you purchase something that you can afford, you won’t have problems saving up for a wedding.

Just had the same convo with my boss- how weddings were mostly to start the couple off right (not have them break even in what they spent). i still think no matter what you chose you always will think of the other side. so just enjoy whatever choice you make!

I don't regret putting our money towards a big wedding because you only do it once. We are actually going to take some of the gift money we get from the wedding to put that down on a house along with some additional money we would have saved up.

Absolutely. FH, didn't want a big wedding, but I convinced him by saying we would ' only spend 15,000.00.' A year later, and double that budget, I realized, we should have just eloped and bought the house, because it is what i really want now . And since FH and I paid for the wedding 100% solo, we will have to wait at least 3 years before having enough money for a home.
