it is proper to invite the officiant/priest...they usually do decline though..unless they are a family friend of course

Re: Do you send officiant an invite?
I was under the impression that they are considered a 'vendor' and they are being paid to come and do a job. I have no relationship with this person and do not expect them to stay and sit down with people they do not know.
Am I wrong for thinking this?

I also feel uncomfortable inviting them out of the blue! I can understand if you have a personal relationship with your officiant, but we're not even sure who's marrying us yet from our church.

Re: Do you send officiant an invite?
I think etiquette dictates that you are supposed to, but of course, whatever you feel comfortable with.
I know for a fact that our priest will not be able to attend, he told me himself when I booked the church that if we picked a Saturday he wouldn't be able to come due to a service going on after the ceremony. He assumed he was being invited lol, but he is close with FH's family, so it wasn't inappropriate. We're still going to send an invite anyway though, even knowing he's going to decline.

Re: Do you send officiant an invite?
The deacon marrying us at the church is not a family friend & honestly we first met him when we booked the church. I wasnt going to invite him but i do know its appropriate. Im not sending an invitation he will get a personal invite face to face at our 2 month meeting.

Re: Do you send officiant an invite?
Really????? This is so weird to me.
I'm going to ask the priest from my family's church to marry us, but we are getting married at the RH and I don't really want him to stay? I don't know him from a hole in the wall because after I moved out, the parish changed priests.
So I have to invite him? But I don't wanna! lol

Yes, I think that would be nice. Otherwise, how would they know they were invited.

Re: Do you send officiant an invite?
Not sure if this right but I am treating my officiant as a vendor and I am only expecting her to stay for the ceremony and then that is it. I am really treating this as she is a vendor so no I will not be sending an invite.

Re: Do you send officiant an invite?
Thanks everyone for weighing in on this! While we haven't known our priest for very long, we've been attending weekly mass for 7 months and she's doing a kind of pre-marital counseling and has always been very friendly and kind to us. I'm going to address the invite now!
