Do you think sexual predators can be reformed?

Do you think sexual predators can be reformed?

I was just watching Dr. Phil, and he had the 19 year old kid who was believed to be a sexual predator.
He took a lie detector test, and it was revealed that he has, in fact, touched his sister, and other females, inappropriately.
The kid's family was pretty much disowning him, and Dr. Phil was promising him help.
But I find it hard to believe that that is something that can be changed....is it even possible to reform someone like that?

I don't know. Its possible but I don't know if there is evidence of it yet.

No. I don't think so. But I also am conflicted on how they alert neighborhoods now when a convicted offender moves in. It's all so upsetting.

That's hard. If it is a matter of being taught what is right and wrong (like a robber, murderer, drug dealer), then yes, I believe they could be reformed. Some believe people have a genetic predisposition to like young children sexually (like homosexuals have a genetic predisposition to favor those of the same sex). If it is a genetic trait, I think it would be more difficult to conquer, but I believe it could be done. I think I read a study where a pedophile was shown pictures of children and given shocks each time he became aroused--over time he tended to not become aroused at the sight of children anymore.

One of my very best friends owns a counseling center in Texas and they specialize in sex offenders...it takes ALOT of work..ALOT ALOT of work, but they can change, most times they dont..but if they address the underlying issues..they can be helped..many sex offenders were abused themsleves and harbor inner feelings that were never addressed..its very sad and one of the toughest populations to work with.

Alicia,
That's good to hear...i guess i've watched one too many Law & Order SVU episodes where they swear people cannot be reformed!

this boy seemed so incredibly bizarre the entire time he was on the show. Like he wanted to tell the truth - but how do you tell your parents you have touched your little sister inappropriatley? He seemed really conflicted at times....like he'd been living a lie for so long, and it was hrad to break the pattern of behaviour.
i felt badly for the boy actually....

I don't think they can change. Once a predator always a predator. And as far aas I am concerned I wouldn't want to live near one that is so-called reformed. I wouldn't take the chance with my children. Ugh, makes me sick to think about it.

Not that I totally believe this kid, and not that it's even an excuse...but he claims to have been sexually abused by 27 people during his life....
that's got to mess you up somehow!
