Do your parents treat you like a wife?

Do your parents treat you like a wife?

Hi Ladies,

I was just wondering how the dynamic of some of your familes work.

I don't think my family (parents specifically) see FH & myself as a 'family unit' or specifically see me as his wife (even though i know we're not married yet).

Just small things; it's hard to exlpain...like how i'll cook dinner my Mom will be like can't he cook? Or he doesn't cook? Or when i say i spent the morning cleaning she'll comment on that and how i didn't do it when i lived with them. i don't know; maybe it's just parents always thinking of their kids and kids. Guess it just seems like they don't get how or why i make my house a priority now. Like staying home to clean or cook instead of coming by to visit on my ONE day off for the week??

I am sure on some level your parents don't want to see you as a floormat, and maybe that's why they comment about him not cooking and you doing a lot of the work on your own (or so it sounds from that post, totally might not be). I think parents just always want the best for their kids and they don't want to see them hurt! I'm sure they are just trying to make sure that the chores and work around the house is being split between you & FH and not all on you.

my family is not here....so Im not sure how if they perceive us as a family unit yet, but his side....WOW! Whenever we go to events, they still act as if we are children- they give gifts (gifts I would NEVER give) 'in our name', we aren't supposed to bring food to holiday dinners, but she asks everyone else to bring something. FH says I am just overly sensitive...whatever!

They do now, but before we got engaged, no. I hated it when they didn't though.....it made me feel like we were just 2 kids dating

nope. its a constant argument.
My mother specifically, she does the gift thing too. We have a son together, and when people sent us gifts, she wrote out a thank you cards!! She didn't even give me a minute to write them myself, she had them in the mail the next day.
I really don't think she will ever stop....

my parents have known my FH since he was 13, and they def treat us as a unit. Even though we do not live together, they always include both of us for everything because he is really part of the family. We give our own gifts for family things or food or whatever from us. We did this way before we were even engaged.

this. lol My parents still call me 'baby' because I'm the baby of the family.

They will NEVER look at me otherwise.

It makes FH sometimes.

Yea, I got flack for saying 'i have to get home to make dinner'....I've tried to explain i ENJOY doing things for FH because returns a lot for me.

I'm waiting for the holiday split. We had problems last year and this year I have a feeling is going to be worse. lol.

EXACTLY!! I went to lunch with my parents last week; and they wanted to stay out and go to the mall; visit with my mom's sister. I felt bad trying to rush the time w/them but i had food out defrosting to cook for dinner. They coudln't get why i was going home to cook. Guess they would have preferred i stay hanging with them all day?
