Doctors or nurses

Doctors or nurses

My doctor prescribed augmentin for me. I took it for a few days and had a very bad reaction to it (very nauseous, etc.). Now he switched me to zithromax and I am afraid to take it. After what I went through this weekend, I just don't want to take anything. What side effects are common with this med? I looked it up on WebMD and they seem to be the same as the first drug, hence my hesitation with taking it. Thanks!

Augmentin is a combination of penicillin and potassium. Zithromax is a drug in the category of macrolides, which is not related to penicillin. There should not be a cross reaction by you taking Zithromax. Side effects are mostly gastrointestinal, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, ect, just as other antibiotics are. Many people think because they have an upset stomach that they are 'allergic' to something. Most of the time that is not the case. Hives, difficulty breathing are common signs of an allergic reaction (although not the only signs). Have you ever taken penicillin before? Any reaction to that? I hope this helps. Feel free to FM me anytime.
