I have been teaching in Catholic school for the last 10 years. I am also certified. What step would I start at if I were to do to the DOE next year. Technically that would be step 11 with a MS. Also, would I stay at that step for a long time or do I move on each year? I am very confused! TIA

Re: DOE teachers, I have a question
I can't speak for DOE but in a Long Island district, some districts would look at your salary and try to match it to a step and others would put you on your step based on years of experience (like, step 10 or 11). However, some districts would find that to be quite expensive and may not give you a step for each year. They may offer you, say, step 7. Since there is so much competiton, people usually take what they can get but do try to negotiate higher. Sorry I can't say what the DOE would do! Hope this still helped.

Re: DOE teachers, I have a question
NYC has steps by number and then by letter. You move up at a regular pace and it depends on when you begin as a full-timer. For example, I was appointed effective Feb. 1 and began on Step 1a. EVERYONE goes up to b on March 1. So I went from 1a to 1b in a month. For the most part, the money on the a step and b step are the same but there is a point where you'd increase from a to b.
As for where you'd be placed, I don't know. The scale stops at 8b, then it's longevity increases after ten years, but there's also raises between 8 and 10. I think there's something called Jarema credit which applied to people with experience in other systems, but I am not really sure how it works and where they would put you. Sorry that this is muddled.
You should look on www.uft.org and www.nycenet.edu (the official DOE site)
