DOE teachers, I need certification help!

DOE teachers, I need certification help!

For the last 10 years I have taught at a Catholic school. I have my Master's Degree in Literacy from Fordham University. I also have taken the LAST, ATSW, and CST and passed them all. I hold MA state certification in grades 5-9. How difficult is it going to be to obtain city & state certification? The website doesn't really make sense to me. TIA for your help!

Do the state paperwork first. There is a PDF file on the NYSED website.

It's been 8 years since I did my city licensing. What a pain that was. No one knew what they were doing.

Have you been fingerprinted by the DOE yet? You have to do that first.

Have you visited Teach NY ?

Hi!

It seems that you are well on your way to certification as you have passed all the tests and TracyIn Queens is right---get that fingerprinting done ASAP. If you have a region that you are interested in, I would contact them and sometimes they can walk you through the process as it can be confusing at times. Since you have so much experience, the good news is that you'll most likely be placed at a higher salary step than most! Also, you need to take a child abuse recognition workshop and a violence recognition workshop which the UFT offers (they usually cater to union members first and then outside teachers), and if I'm not mistaken one or both of them can be completed online too.

Hope I haven't confused you!

Good luck!

The child abuse and violence prevention can be done online through boces. It takes a while for each one, but you get to print the certificate out at the end. It is in their virtual learning section if you go on to their website!!

I just remembered too that the UFT has a certification hotline. I am sure it is much easier to reach someone here:
(212) 253 - 8800

Also, uft.org has a page for new teachers with a lot of info.
