Does a guy still wear a suit to an afternoon wedding?

Does a guy still wear a suit to an afternoon wedding?

I will be attending my very first afternoon wedding next weekend (at the Watermill) and I know obviously not to wear a gown, I'm wearing a summery knee-length dress, but should my husband still wear a suit? If not a suit, what?

Wear a suit, but just not a very uncomfortable or fancy one. Dress pants, a nice dress shirt, tie and blazer. Something he would wear if he had an office job.

He could wear a sports jacket and slacks and a light colored tie rather than a dark suit and dark tie. I still think a man should wear a jacket. Unless the invitation states that it is very informal - perhaps a backyard event or a destination wedding -I would always expect a man to wear a jacket.

My FH does but then he takes his jacket off (he does this at most weddings though). I went to an afternoon wedding a couple of months ago and there were a couple of guys there with jeans on....I couldn't believe it!!! FH didn't mind being dressed up though...its a wedding and people should dress appropriately.

definitely wear a suit - I remember a wedding I went to about two years ago in the afternoon and a bunch of guys showed up in jean shorts (I fondly call them jorts) and wife beaters - I was mortified!

I dont think a suit is necessary, but if he has a light colored one, that may be good.

Just for the record, my husband would never show up to a wedding in shorts, jeans or anything else completely inappropriate. I'm simply wondering if there is an appropriate alternative to a suit and tie— Seems odd to me to get that dressed up so early in the day.

oh, sorry - your question just brought back memories of the wedding I went to...I know most respectable people would not wear jeans or shorts :)

My sister had a sat. afternoon wedding. She felt that since her dress and the BM dresses were no less dressy than an evening affair... groom and GM were still in a tuxes and they were hosting the event at a formal location, that the guests shouldn't be less dressy either. She wasn't looking for people to be black tie, but didn't want sun dresses either... I can see her point and can also see why some might dress slightly less formal than an evening event. Do you know what the bride and groom want?

I think pants, shirt and a tie are fine....a jacket may not be necessary!

I have trouble with this. My wedding ceremony is at 3 but the reception isn't until 7 so I wonder what people will be wearing. It's kind of confusing.

I vote for a suit or nice pants with a sports jacket with a tie.

I think maybe he could get away with omitting the jacket....

Being an early bride, I would like to see the guys in suit. I think it helps keep it a little more formal, instead of 'just a party'. Is a lighter colored suit an option for your DH?

Me too... I also agree with whats someone else said, about the BP being just as formal as if it was an evening affair. Afternoon doesn't automatically mean informal. I think a suit and tie is appropriate attire for a wedding, unless the invitation specifically states it will be casual.

he should definitely wear a suit, but can take the jacket off if he wants.
