if there is no inner then it goes on the outer.

I guess it can be a matter of preference, but I only wrote 'and guest' on the inners.

if you have both inner and outer envelopes, 'and guest' definitely ONLY goes on the inner. if you only have outer, then put it on the outer.

I would put it on the inner envelopes. If you know who the 'guest' is, you should write their name and it can go on the outter envelope.
