If you definitely don't want to transfer, take the F from 71st to 42nd street/Bryant Park. That will leave you off on 42nd and 6th (stay near the back of the train to get out at 42nd). You'll then have to walk east 3 avenues.
If you are willing to transfer, take the E to 53rd/Lex and transfer to the downtown 6 one stop to 42nd Street/Grand Central. If you stay to the front of the six train, you'll get out on Park and 42nd, the building is right there.

Sorry, I'm a subway girl, I don't know anything about buses. You could take the 42nd street crosstown bus from 6th avenue over to Park/Lex if you take the F.

I agree - that is one of my pet peeves with the trains. I don't understand how the 7 express doesn't stop there when 5 other lines do!
