My heart has been doing this weird thing the past 3 days - every few seconds it'll do this weird beat, like it's hiccuping. I went to my doctor and he gave me an EKG. He said everything is fine, and that what's happening to me is normal for someone that has an MVP (heart murmur). I usually get this weird heartbeat every now and then but it'll only do it ONCE and then stop. This is freaking me out!

Re: Does anybody get weird heartbeats?
Yup, I've had them too on occasion and they scare me. I don't know what it is or why it happens!

Re: Does anybody get weird heartbeats?
I get something too. It is not a weird heartbeat though. I get this paralyzing sting in my chest. It only lasts about 3 seconds but it hurts bad. I can't move when it happens either. My doctor says everything is fine but I am still a bit worried.
my mom has had a heart murmur her whole life...and while she was never the athletic type...she does power walk and probably could do more strenuous activities if she pushed herself...
but there are times when she'll climb up the stairs (not everytime) where she will just stop and wait...thats when she feels a flutter...
if your doctor knows about and is monitoring it...I would just be conscious of any strenuous activities...

Re: Does anybody get weird heartbeats?
Sounds like your having premature ventricular contractions, or 'pvc''s. Normally your hearbeat is controlled by a signal sent down from the atria, which tells the ventricles to contract. A pvc is when the ventricles take it upon themselves to contract without word from the atria, so to speak. It happens out of sync, which is the funny flutter or skipped beat you feel. It takes your heart just a second to get back in rhythm, you may feel that as a little pause after the flutter.
Occassional pvc's are okay, and happen to normal helathy people. They can be brought on by stress, or caffeine and electrolyte imbalances, among other things. They become problematic when they are frequent (multiple times in a minute), or consecutively (alot in a row).
If it continues, or gets worse, or is accompanied by dizziness or lightheadness, I would contact my doc.
Hopes this helps, don't worry too much!

I have been getting the same and it scares the hell out of me!! I am thinking of going to a doctor. I used to get these once and awhile but they are now more frequent. I am attributing them to all the additional stress.

Thanks! Wow, you know a lot about this stuff! I had read too that this weird palpatation can be caused by stress, caffeine, etc. I guess I AM a little stressed out what with the wedding less than 90 days away, working on my Master's thesis, AND I'm changing jobs in 2 weeks

then he started thinking, and he gets that every time he eats salmon, other times too, but always with the salmon, so he's now stopped eating that so much

I've been getting them very frequently. I get both a flutter and sometimes a really heavy heartbeat - it's scary!

It happens to me alot! I actually spend the night in the ER one night because it was so bad. I also had pain. I ended up going to a specialist to have everything checked out and they said it is all from stress!

Re: Does anybody get weird heartbeats?
I've had it happen to me too. I mentioned to my Dr. during one routine checkup that I sometimes get heart palpitations. He did a few EKG's and I ended up having to see a heart specialist as a precaution. I got to wear one of those heart monitor halter thingies for a day (not very fun) and have a sonogram done (I think that's what it was called). Anyway, all the test results came back fine. It was most likely all due to stress/anxiety.

Re: Does anybody get weird heartbeats?
Its been happening to me for years, since I was in HS. Just a few months ago though, when I changed my form of birth control, it started happening every 5-15 minutes. It was like my heart was skipping a beat and getting all our of rhythm. It would last about 3 seconds and then go away until the next time. It really freaked me out. I ended up switching pills back to what I had been using previously, but the doctor didn't seemed fased by it. she was more concerned with my one headache I got while I was on the new pills. I definitely know that it had to be that because nothing else in my lifestyle had changed. Thankfully, its stopped now that I'm back to my old stuff.
I also get sometehing, maybe every 2-4 months where my heart beats so hard that I can actually see it pumping when I look down at my shirt. It makes my throat feel like someone's choking me, but then it goes away, usually between 2-20 min. I had an ekg done when I was in HS, but they found nothing irregular.

Re: Does anybody get weird heartbeats?
I have fast heartbeat (it has a medical name but I don't know how to spell it) Sometimes if I get up too quick, walk up a long flight of stairs my heart starts pumping like crazy. I get irregular heartbeats like hiccups in my chest once in a while. I know when its about to happen because I'm so used to it. I've been to the doctor for it and she wanted to give me something to slow my heart a little which. I decided aganist it because I have very low Blood Pressure and the pills might have made me pass out! So I learned to live with it. Its not as bad as it used to be and stress is a major factor. I also get the stabbing pain in my chest for a second or two sometimes but I think its also when I get very stressed out.
I strongly reccomend to go to the doctor and if you don't like what he/she has told you get a second opion! Its your body and only you know when somethings not right.
