I have really painful knees. Especially in the humid weather I get a dull ache and I am constantly taking Advil to relieve it. If I don't take the Advil they swell up. Taking the stairs is not as easy as it used to be (and I am only 26!) I know I have to go see a doctor because it is constantly bothering me. I think I prob need a prescription because I am sure the Advil is tearing up my stomach.
Anyone else go through this?
eta: my left knee also cracks if i bend down.

Re: Does anyone else have knee problems?
I have patella tendinitis in my left knee. I started during HS from all the sports I played. Now that I am less active it doesn't bother me as much, but every now and then it acts up especially when it is raining or I a walking down hills/down stairs. I used to wear a chopart brace but it didn't help much. What did help was physical therapy...strenghtening the muscles surrounding my knee, they said put less pressure on my tendon.

I had broken my right ACL- I had to have surgery to repair it, and now my knee will never be right. I can walk fine, but I definately know when it is going to rain- it aches SO bad.

I have bad pains in my knees too. I think I got it from the gym (doing squats) Went to the doctor - he took some x-rays and everything looks fine. He can't explain the pain so I assume it is missing cartilage can't do much for that. At night I keep them elevated on two pillows I feel this works.

Re: Does anyone else have knee problems?
I've had knee problems for a long time. The doctor claims it was from all the years of tap dancing I took. I've had surgery. It still bothers me especially when bad weather is coming.

Re: Does anyone else have knee problems?
My knees are terrible. I have had 2 surgeries already on my right knee and now the doctor says my left knee is starting to go. He says I will definitely need another surgery in a few years and a knee replacement too when I am in my 50's.
Ps. the hardest part for me is the stairs, especially going up. It sucks!!!

I have bad knees, too...ever since I was younger....especially my left knee...it pops and cracks when I walk and aches all the time. I used to run on the treadmill every day and had to stop b/c of the pain.....

Re: Does anyone else have knee problems?
I think the cracking is cartilidge, but I'm not sure. I have one bad knee that I'm actually having arthroscopy on tomorrow (just had arthroscopy on my ankle 2 weeks ago and I'm walking pretty well). I tore my meniscus and I have some floating cartilidge in my knee. If you need a recommendation for an orthopedist, let me know. I saw a bunch of really bad ones before I found a great medical group.

Had that.. and did the arthroscopy Went to a HORRIBLE Orthopedic in Cedarhurst. Name was Craig Levitz.
BEWARE!!! He's a MONSTER! I have documented writen proof he could care less about his patients. In his own words 'I don't have a magic wand to make the pain go away' this was after a full year of constant suffering! He wrote that to me. Ba$tard!
I went to a different PT and in less than 3 months I felt a WHOLE lot better than the year I spent in his so-called 'care' and 'treatment'.
Still the damage was done. I had no Physical Therapy after my surgery. He didnt give me any. It was nearly a month before I started. My meniscus (the healthy part) never correctly re-adhered back to the knee cavity. My MRI's show a big black hole. It's strange.
I still (obviously) have pain. Im on Orthodics now.. (Shoe inserts) and just started on a phase of slowing angling my feet out to relive stress on my outter knee.
Ultimately, the verdict is I have lost 10% usage of my knee and according to the MRI I have orthoproritis (Sp? the decay of bone) in my knee.
Yeah me!
ETA: when I finally left Dr. Levitz's care (I needed his letter to prove to my adjuster he was worthless) I wasn't even able to sit on the floor or bring my foot back to touch my butt. I hate that man passionately. He made a bad thing 100times worse.

Re: Does anyone else have knee problems?
That sounds awful!! The worst one I had was a doctor in Roslyn. He tried to take fluid off my knee and the pain was SO bad, I broke out in a cold sweat and nearly passed out. It wasn't till I started seeing my current doctors (I have 2 since I'm 'special' = accident prone), that I realized it is not supposed to hurt!! Let me just plug them here: Dr. Feder and Dr. Tucker at Orlin & Cohen.
ETA: I should mention that I was a lacrosse goalie, so I can deal with pain really well. That guy was such a schmuck!

Re: Does anyone else have knee problems?
I have chondromalacia...deterioration of the cartilage under the kneecap. Hurts like a sonofabitch when it's acting up, but hasn't been too bad for the most part. See an orthopedist.
FYI, I would strongly suggest removing the names of the doctors anyone just had bad things to say about and leave it to FM. You're opening yourselves up to some serious liability.

Re: Does anyone else have knee problems?
I would say an orthopedist. They can prescribe an MRI to see exactly what is wrong with your knee and what treatment is advisable. They'll also be able to give you a prescription for physical therapy and a strong anti-inflammatory like Naproxen or Vioxx.

i have chondromalaysia in the patella...plain and simple in middle school my muscle grew faster than my bone, hence it grew over the bone. it slips out occassionally and i go to the doctor and get fun meds. i am so not complaining...i love the fun meds Naproxen works wonders.

Re: Does anyone else have knee problems?
Just wanted to let all my 'knee problem girls' know that I had my surgery this morning (arthrosopy for medial and lateral meniscus repair) and it went so well! My anesthesiologist was really great. I didn't wake up naseous (for once) AND I didn't even have a sore throat. I have to say that the South Short Ambulatory Center was great--the environment is a lot less stressful than a hospital. Having had ankle surgery just 2 weeks ago, I can make an accurate comparison!!

Re: Does anyone else have knee problems?
I have severely eroded cartilage under my right kneecap. My kneecap kept sliding , so the doctor had to cut the connective tissue. The recovery was actually a lot more painful than I thought it would be. I was soooo sick after from the anesthesia and my throat was killing me.
