does anyone else wonder if BC is harmful?

are there any long term effects to being on the pill? i know this sounds like a stupid question but i know a few woman i work with are having a hard time getting pregnant and all three of them were on the pill for 10 years!!! i wonder if that has anything to do with them not being able to get pregnant. They are both young and have young husbands ... i mean i know there are many reason why people cant have children but does anyone else wonder what BC pill really do to you? ... just wondering

I do! You're not alone.

I was on the pill for a year and just went off for three months to cleanse my body. I intend to go back on and have appointment with my gyn to discuss this. I'll probably go off for a couple of months next year as well.

i worry about this too. i want to go on it cuz we dont want children yet, but on the same token i dont want any issues when i come off it. i dunno, i have a gyno appointment soon, im going to ask about it then. its something u should probably discuss with your doctor.

I am not on BC, but my MOH was for over 10 year and within a few weeks of going off of it, she was pregnant. I really think it depends on the person. Another friend was told to go on BC by her doctor to regulate her periods so that when they started trying to get pregnant, she wouldn't have a hard time.

I think if it were very harmful there would probably be reports out there (including publicized lawsuits), no?

Having said that, anything unnatural you put into your body on a regular basis will have some affect at the end of the day. The severity of that affect is different for everybody.

I feel the same way and that is why I stopped taking it! I already have a thyroid condition that can affect trying to have kids, so I didn't want to increase my chances with BC. I feel that could be why there is so many women with problems trying to have kids.

But I may just go on it for a few months till after the wedding.

My gyn advised me that the pill works differently now as opposed to years ago when many people would have trouble conceiving after being on it long term. I've been on it for nearly 10 years now and she said that if/when we want to try to get pregnant to give it a few months after coming off the pill to start trying.

I don't take birth control because I honestly feel that if you are using a pill to control your hormones, it's obviously not natural so who knows what the long term effects are.

I think it depends on the person. I went off because I have severe migraines and they are related to my hormone levels.

I know people who do great on them and have no problems getting pregnant.

not really... all my friends who got married have been on the pill for 10+ years and 3 of them got off the pill after the wedding and got pregnant immediately... like within 3 months of stopping the pill... I think it depends on the person .. other than that the only side effect Im concerend with is getting acne when i stop taking the pill! lol

I definitely do! I was on the pill for a few years, and when I went off it....I was a MESS. I was crying, depressed, gained weight....and it took a while for everything to regulate. Something just didn't seem right about it, and I would never go on the pill again!

If I was worried about it, I wouldn't be on it. I've been on the pill for a REALLY long time and have never had any issues with it. I have asked my dr several times if I should give my body a 'rest' and go off and she says there's no reason to do that. There are so many different types of pills with different hormone levels that if one affects you, another one will work.

I really not concerned about it.

i was on the BCP pill for many years. i stopped taking it in august of 2008, and got pregnant in dec 2008. some doctors will recommended to stop taking it 3-6 months before TTC so your body can regulate itself, but it is possible to get pregnant as soon as you stop taking it. i really don't think there is anything to fear about getting pregnant after you stop taking BCP.

I asked my mom this question a month ago (she's a PA). She said they used to be more harmful because their was such a HIGH dose of estrogen in them, but all BC is low dose now. The one that I know has long term effects is the Depo shot. It causes calcium loss which can cause ostioprosis (sp?). A few cycles of it isn't going to hamr you (approx. a yr or yr and a half) but long term use over that point could cause future problems. The patch increases your risk of blood clots and anerisims (sp?) however I'm not sure by how much. This is only while you are on it though, not once you stop.

All birth control may decrease your ability to get pregnant for up to 6 months. However it depends on what type you are taking, how long, and your individual body. My sis was pregnant in 2 weeks!

i dont think the pill causes problems...my sister was on the pill for about 13 years and got pregnant as soon as she went off.

I do think about this a lot...I've been on the pill for almost 9 years now, but I've asked a couple of doctors a couple of times and they all say I've got nothing to worry about.

I'm really more worried to go off it because I went on for crazy, hormones raging PMS...and I don't want to turn into a psych b!tch when I want to get pregnant!

the pill is the most tested drug out there. It depends on the person, but it can take a few months after going off of it for you to be able to get pregnant. How long ago did they go off of it?

I def think any type of pill that alters our bodies natural rhythm is harmful.

I feel like alot of diseases and cancers have risen do to side effects from medications and various enviormental factors. Alot of this stuff did not exist in the past but are very rampant today.

Haven't done any research on this, it's just my opinion.

I don't believe in putting anything into your body unless medically necessary, and I am fortunate to have regular periods, so therefore, it is not medically necessary for me to be on BC. FH also does not want me to be on it because of the side affects that are associated with it, because he thinks it's stupid to willingly and knowingly put yourself at risk for blood clots, stroke, heart attack, etc. For once, I tend to agree with him. So yeah, it makes things hard for us, because it would be really nice to take a magic pill and not get pregnant, but we value my health more than that, so we chose not to use it, and therefore have made some serious concessions in our relationship. I just don't think it's natural, and it skeeves me.

I do. I used to take it and it has screwed me up completely I have always been very regular like to the day and then in went on BC. I stopped taking it in November and now my cycle goes up a day every month and I am now at 32 days who knows what next month will be. My friend who stopped taking didn't get her period for months after. I think anything that can mess around with your body like that can't be that great for you. I know tons of people take it and nothing happens to them when they stop taking it they are perfectly fine but it doesn't work like that for everyone. I really don't trust anything the government says is ok to take.
