I feel so bad leaving him but I come home for lunch after about 4 hours and he barks and cries. I feel horrible but meanwhile I don't want to give in to him because he's starting to get spoiled.

I think this is pretty normal. I give my puppy a kong stuffed with kibble and peanut butter. He gets so excited about that, that he doesn't even care when I leave. I also bought the Comfort Zone D.A.P. that you plug in and that also seemed to calm him down.

Honestly, I don't know -- but DH and I were home alot with Satchmo over the Christmas holiday and we expanded his pen so he had about a quarter of the kitchen to play in. Well, he started to freak out every time we put him in crate or ex-pen. I mean he was howling, shaking, salivating, urinating on the floor (which he had never done in the past). I was really worried that he was developing separation anxiety, so out of desperation I bought the DAP. I plugged it in and he continued howling for about 2 hours. I finally got the idea that maybe I should put his pen back to its earlier configuration -- I thought maybe he was less secure with all the room. He calmed down 10 minutes after that and he seemed calmer than he had been even before these episodes, so I'm inclined to think that changing his pen helped, but I also think the DAP helped, too. I read in the Whole Dog Journal that they help about 60% of dogs.
One word of advice, I paid way too much for mine ($44 at Petco), you can get them for $29 on-line, but I was desperate and wanted it right away.
