I talked to my mom yesterday and she says she got invited to a bridal shower for her co-worker/friend's future daughter-in-law.
So I say, 'Have you ever even met the bride?' So my mom says 'Nope never met her in my life.' So, I'm like 'Well at least you don't have to go to the shower then.'
And then she freaks out about how could she NOT go, blah blah... and that OF COURSE she's going... but I'm really stumped to figure out how in the first place she is even invited. It makes absolutely NO sense to me why people who have never met the bride are invited to the shower!! This made my mom even madder when I told her so.
Thoughts?

I agree. If I had never met the bride, I wouldn't go to the shower either. Unless I were a relative of the groom, and I just happened to not have met the bride yet. Then I would go...

I agree. FMIL wanted to invite some of her friends to my shower, ones i had never met. I told her you don't do that, I don't want them invited... and she didn't agree. (the people weren't invited)

I agree with you Lori - very strange! I would def not feel obligated to go if I never met the bride. (Unless it was my best friend's long lost daughter or something)

i disagree. my fmil has a few friend/co-workers that i had not met but knew my fi for years and years. jmo- since the shower is essentially for the bride and groom friends of my fmil should also be invited.
now i'm not talking about a lot of friends, maybe 3, i just never had the opportunity to meet them yet.

Some people invite all the women that are invited to the wedding to the shower. I am not going to do this. I am only inviting the family and close friends. My mom, however, is insisting on having some of her coworkers that I maybe met once or twice. I think it is because she is always chatting with them about the plans and stuff so she wants them invited.

Right, it's all a matter of opinion... I agree with those of you who said the FMIL invites a few family members or something... but FMIL's co-workers just seems like a far stretch IMO. To each his own!

Re: does anyone find this strange?
I think its ridiculous but I've heard of it before. One of my girlfriends was invited to a shower for one of her husband's friends, but she had never met the bride either and only met the groom once or twice so she couldn't figure out why she was invited. And meanwhile her husband was trying to convince her to go! But she just sent a gift instead.
I do remember planning my MOH's shower, her MIL was saying if so and so doesn't go I'll be really upset with her -- her MIL had gone to this woman's shower and wedding --and of course, this person had never met the bride.
I think its silly, but that's just me.

Me too. I was invited to an ex's fiancee's bridal shower. I had never met her before! It would have been so wierd. 'Uh, hi. I'm Shelly, I used to date your fiancee. Congrats on your wedding. ' Talk about awkward. I was away at college anyway, but still.
Ummm it doesnt seem too strange to me. If my mom was throwing my shower and she wanted women from her office to be there, it would be ok. My mom is also the type to not stop talking about my wedding so those people probably feel like they know me.

I agree with mattituckprincess my FMIL lives in nj and there is alot of her friends and family i have never met but they have known my Fh for years so i know they will be invited to the shower. I'm not talking about a whole lot of them but a few are fine i don't have a problem with that.

I also disagree. My mom is inviting people two coworkers to my wedding, one of which I think I have met once in passing. They werent invited to the shower simply to keep the #s down. At my shower there were people from FH side that I didnt know, an old neighbor, etc. I really dont find it that odd. Unless of course your mom is not really friendly with the co-worker. But if they are close I dont see the issue really....

Re: does anyone find this strange?
I am not sure what the hell will happen at mine but I sure hope I know everyone!!!
I wouldn't want to go to a shower where I didn't know the bride and I wouldn't want people I didn't know at mine. Just weird to me.
There are special circumstances of course but I don't think we have any of those. :)

I also disagree. My mom and FMIL are inviting their friends to my showers. Now if none of us had met that might be wierd but if they are friends with the moms it doesn't seem that strange.

I totally agree. I don't want anyone at my shower that I don't know. While the gifts are for the bride and groom, the shower's not - how could it be if the groom's not even invited!
