Does anyone have any suggestions for me..

On how to get a job within the educational field? As some of you know, I took my certification test on Saturday and I am waiting for the results. But before I can actually start teaching, I need to pass the test and have my application processed through the state which can take a while. I cannot stand my job here in the city anymore. I would rather leave and do anything in the ed industry - I have administrative experience, I will do office work anything, just to get in. Do I send letters to the district offices?

If you have a bachelor's degree, you can sub for 60 days in NYS. If you have an associated degree you can get a job as a Teacher's Assistant.

Thanks Bri I'm in NJ though. I got the application for the Sub license in NJ but it's not steady work and with a mortgage to pay that makes me nervous....plus I think you cannot be a Sub and apply for the perm cert at the same time....I'd rather have the cert.

That's right- duh!- I forgot you were in Jersey . . .

I am not sure what you mean about subbing and applying for your perm. certificate . . .
I am not familiar with NJ guidelines . . .

the only way to get permantly certified is after you have been teaching for a few years... subbing or being a TA or para is a great way to get your foot in the door!!

... if you pass this test, will you most likey have your certification by sept?? if so, when you send out resumes, just put that your certification is pending...

also, when i was a sub, i was called in almost everyday and I was only on one sub list... a lot of districts need subs... so it was pretty steady in my case...

hope this helps!

I was going to say the same thing but was unsure of the certification requirements and rules in NJ

I agree with BriBri....look in the Times and Newsday. Now is the time the schools are advertising for Anticipating vacancies for next year.
Good Luck!!!!!

I'm in NJ too so I might be able to help a little. I'm pretty sure you can have a sub certificate and apply for your perm certificate at the same time. That's what I had to do. I was fully licensed and certified in NY and when I moved to NJ I applied to the DOE for my teaching certificate. I had all the requirements through reciprocity, but had to go through the whole application process just the same. I applied in early June, got hired by a school district in late June, but since I didn't have my certification yet I had to apply for a sub certificate through the county so that I could work. On a side note, my regular teaching certificate did not arrive until January!! Thank god my district still paid me as a certified teacher and not a sub! I think with subbing you can get fairly steady work, especially if you apply to a few districts. Towards the end of the school year a lot of teachers take time off so it will probably be picking up. The only problem would be the summer. But, I think subbing would be a good idea so that you can get your foot in the door of a district. I think you'd have better chances of getting hired if you had subbed in the district and would give you some related experience. Are you going through the alternate route or are you going back to school first? I was just talking to a girl the other day who was subbing in my school and she was going to i think montclair for her masters because she didn't have an undergrad degree in teaching. she said that it's hard to find a job as an alternate route teacher. maybe it depends on where you want to teach and whether or not you are elem ed or a subject teacher. i'm not sure. just like on LI, it's tough to get an elem ed job in NJ too. for teaching jobs in NJ, look at www.njschooljobs.com and www.njhire.com . also if you can search the classified ads from several nj newspapers at a time if you go to www.nj.com
