Does anyone have problems with inflamed jaws?

What do you do when you get it - mine hasn't hurt in a while but I can barely open my jaw today - I was told to take asprin, and use hot water bottle and eat soft foods - any other suggestions?

lol Marcella, I laughed when I saw this question to, but on a serious note, yes I do... I have TMJ, where my jaw goes in and out of it's socket when I chew things like gum, bagels anything chewy like that. There's an exercise that a friend of mine showed me, where you hold your chin and move your mouth up and down, while guiding it to stay in place. Other than that, if it really bothers me I take 2 advils and relax

I also have TMJ and wear a mouthpiece at night b/c I clench and grind...ugh! It's the worst....
But if I wear the mouthpiece consistantly (which I never do), it usually feels ok.

Re: Does anyone have jaw problems?

See the dr told me just that my jaw was inflammed but the dentist told me I didn't grind my teeth - but that maybe I had either clentched my teeth (stress from looking for a job, A TON of stress from bridesmaids who think they should start fights with everyone on a regular basis)

So they don't know where it comes from but I haven't gotten it in a few months - and it makes me feel like my ear is KILLING me

I have never sought medical attention, but when Im stressed, my jaw bothers me. It feels tight, strained.

TMJ here too. My jaw clicks and gets really tense sometimes and hurts like a B!7 !!!

It sucks because there's not much you can do about it besides take pain relivers and try to massage your jaw when it gets bad.

See this feels like a bad ear infection (I just had a physical yesterday so I KNOW it is not) but it hurts to talk, chew etc and it hurts around the joint in front of the ear but only on the right side

Same here.

Advil works better than Tylenol - b/c it's usually muscle inflammation that is contributing to the TMJ/soreness.

Warm, moist packs on the jaw/cheeks also help. Massages. Eating soft foods will help.

I grind AND clench. That will most definitely contribute to an aggrivated TMJ. I'm surprised your dentist didn't agree with that.

he examined my teeth AND took xrays and said that I definintely did NOT grind - I 'might' clentch - but maybe I just bit hard onto something that inflammed it - but I would remember that

Re: Does anyone have jaw problems?

I have TMJ too. I got it from whip lash. I was in a car accident two years ago where I was rear ended by a ford taurus and my honda civic went under a toyota corolla. The corolla hit a lexus. We were all waiting at a red light when the taurus, who wasnt paying attention slammed into the back of my car.

I had two herniated discs in my back, one in my neck, sciatica and TMJ.

TMJ stinks....I hate it. Danielle always tells me she hears my jaw clicking when we are eating. There is not much that I do for my jaw when it hurts. I cannot take advil because I am allergic to Ibuprofin. If I take tylenol it does nothing...I usually just wait it out.

I am sorry to hear that - I am also allergic to advil! And it is horrible - I was told to take things like excedrin migrane (which is tylenol, asperin and caffine) it gives you the extra punch - Tylenol alone does NOTHING for me -

Re: Does anyone have jaw problems?

I have minor jaw problems stemming from an overbite that was never corrected. It clicks sometimes, and I can't chew gum much anymore.

I think some of it comes from my incorrect singing technique - I've never been able to let my jaw go completely.

ETA: I don't know what other good medicines to take, but the excedrin migraine sounds like a good thing...
