Does anyone have knowledge of Wild Birds?

Does anyone have knowledge of Wild Birds?

We found a fledgling blue jay in our yard a few days ago. It was just hopping around trying to maybe fly any day. I did research online and it said to not interfere with it, leave it where you found it and as long as you see the mother coming to feed it, it will be fine. Yesterday he kind of had its head in its wing in a corner by our fence. It found its place to sleep under a window outside my house and I woke up and found it dead. I am wondering if anyone has any info on what could of been wrong. It didnt seems like an animal got it or anything. My yard is fenced in and we do live next to woods, but if we put the bird in the woods, there is so much brush there that we were afraid the mother wouldnt be able to find it. I hope I did the right thing by leaving it in the yard.

THe next time this happens, bring the baby to my husband's practice:
Jefferson Animal Hospital
606 Route 112
Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776

You can drop him off, and he has AMAZING staff that have successfully fed baby birds and released them when they are weeaned.
THey do this all the time...even with baby racoons, squirrels.
Now is the season where this starts happening.

THis is not your fault, and it's possible he was very sick and nothing could've been done. But ifyou see a baby bird on the ground, with no mother around, bring it down, and they will do everything they can. (There are two vet. techcnicians in particular who are amazing at this! It can be very complicated, so don't do this on your own...you have to put the food in their crops, let the crops empty before next feeding, etc. and the food has to be just the right temperature and consistency for the age of the bird).

Re: Does anyone have knowledge of Wild Birds?

This bird was a fledgling (3 weeks old.) From the research I did online, when they are little, with their fur and flapping their wings, they usually hop out of the nest and will fly within a few days. I guess when they are this old, they call them fledglings and when they are only days old with no fur, they call them nestlings. It said as long as you see signs of the mother coming to feed it, then leave it which I did.

My husband and his technicians have successfully reared babies birds that didn't even have any pin feathers...

You should seek a veterarian with experience or wildlife rehabilitators...it's true, most will say leave it alone, and if it dies, it was meant to be...but my husband's practice feeds them...and they are successful with most of the babies...even nestlings.
