My husband's company recently starting surgical trials on an implant developed to repair the mitral valve. Obviously your case would need to be somewhat servere with symptoms that are affecting your lifestyle to consider surgery, but if you need any info, let me know.
Good luck!
ps: keep in mind not all heart murmurs are debilitating. I have tricusip valve regurg (another heart murmur) with no symptoms or medication.

Re: Does anyone have Mitral Valve Prolapse?
I have one - in reference to the antibiotics thing, the echo (I think) will determine whether or not you have backflow of blood into the atrium. If you do, you'll need to take antibiotics before getting your teeth cleaned at the dentist. I forget the reasoning; something to do with bacteria from your teeth gets into your bloodstream when you get your teeth cleaned and it can affect your heart.
I haven't had any problems with the MVP other than about a month ago, I started getting this freaky heartbeat - like my heart was hiccupping. It happened numerous times a day for about a week straight. It scared the crap out of me. My doctor gave me an EKG and said I was fine, and that sometimes things like stress or caffeine can make your heart do this.
Don't worry; MVPs are very common - they're a slight defect in the mitral valve of the heart. The valve doesn't snap shut tightly, so the heart makes a gurgling or murmuring sound. You'll be fine!

Re: Does anyone have Mitral Valve Prolapse?
I have been diagnosed with this since birth... It never affects my daily life and it only 'acts up' when I am stressed or nervous.
Once every couple of years I wear a mini heart-monitor for a day under my clothing (it looks like an old walk-man that attaches to your belt with wires and little sticky things that stick to your chest) to make sure that it's not getting any worse...
My Dr. told me it's not something I should ever think about twice.
I do have to take antibiotics b4 surgical procedures....sometimes even for a deep cleaning at the dentist.

I have one also. The only thing I have to do is to take antibiotics before I go to the dentist. Good luck let us know what happens

I have it. Yes its a fancy name for a murmor. I have an echocardiogram with my yearly physical. I take antiobiotics during any surgical (including dental procedures) procedures. Other than that you can live your normal life. I was told that during pregnancy they will keep an eye on it closer, but not to be alarmed.

I might have it. I am waiting for results from the echocardiogram. I have what anniegirl said, sometimes the heart beat 'hiccups'
