DH decided that he may want to switch careers and sell cars--anyone know if it is a lucrative job?

My brother was a BMW salesman for a while many years ago and I think he did okay ... he knows A LOT about cars.

Thanks, it's scary because the base salary isn't much--it's mostly commission, which scares me a little.

I work part time at a car dealership and I can tell you right now, the car business has not been doing too well the last year. Sales were down drastically from 2003. I've worked there for more than 2 years and when I first started people were selling 10-15 cars per month. These same people are now struggling to sell 5-6 cars a month.

Ugh, thanks. I don't think we could afford our mortgage on the car dealing base salary alone.

Rich had started selling cars down here for Chevy. Our BIL works as a service manager at Ford in Bay Shore...

My father sells Ford's in Huntington and he does pretty well some months but other months can drag. It's really not a stable career, but I guess no sales job is stable.

I think it depends on the dealership...some places just offer a salary, a low one, but not based on comission. I have a friend who works for CarMax and I'm pretty sure he's on salary and he loves it.
