Does anyone know anything about optometry, or go to the eye doc a lot?
I'm a little concerned. Yesterday i went to teh eye doc and they ave me a test I'd never had before. They made me look into a thing with a little pinwheel in it, and the inwheel went out of focus and then itno focus and it gave some kind of printout about my eyes.
The doctor said it would tell him approximately what prescription I'd need, what my problems were, etc.
So i went in to the doc and after looking at my old glasses and the report he said 'What do you think of your eyesight?' SO I said 'it's pretty good, i don't evenr eally need glasses, but my old prescription was wrong and I need a new one'
and he said 'yes, it's very wrong, and I think your eyesight is worse than you think'
According to the report the rech had printerd out I had very severe astigmatism and nearsighted ness and VERY poor vision. Accoridng to the eye doctor's exam I had 20/20 in my left eye and i needed a SLOGHt prescription in the right eye, so the doctor concluded 'this report isn't yours' and the technician did it over again, and go slightly different results (it shouldn;t have changed at all) but it still put me in the smae category of having very poor vision. The docs all stood around looking at it, puzzled, The test had never been so off before, and definitely not repeatedly. I'm kind of concerned. has anyone had this test before? I don't know if should follow up and go to an opthamologist or something, or just let it go.

can you go to a different eye doc for a 2nd opinion? i know that it can be expensive, but i know that your vison is important.

I think I might. I mean logially I should ahve nothing to worry about, because my vision is fine, but I do ahve probems seeing when it's dark or there's glare (which this doc bruched off) so i'm concerned that there could be something weird about the shapre of my eye that threw off the machine.

I go to an eye doctor every 4 months, but I have never heard of this test.
I wonder if the tech wasn't reading the output correctly. But the fact that you did it twice within a matter of minutes and got slightly different results makes me think the equipment wasn't calibrated.

I've had this test before. It kind of gives noises as it gets clearer? It's a guide, but my dr. always goes by my verbal account of what looks clearest. I would go to a different dr....

I've had this test every time I've been to my current eye doctor.

yeha it amkes little mechanical noises. They were doing a lot of toher peope while I was there and none of them had a problem, so that's why I don't know if I can say it's mechanical failure, or whatever. The dcor of course is going by the regular exam, but..I don't know. i don't even know what they test really is

Try FM'ing JenniferLee1122004 - she works at an optometrist ...
I believe the test maps the shape of your eye (which determines your eyesight) ... like I have astigmatism and it's shown in that test by the kinda figure 8 shape in the middle of the scan.

I worked for and phthalmology practice in hicksville for 3 years and the docotors use to do the pretesting that you had done before seeing the patient. It's a refraction machine, I used to do the test, and it's only like a head start for the doctor, is the same thing that the doctor does inside with the letters. You can be 20/20 for you near vision but can be far sighted. A lot of people only wear reading glasses, or glasses to drive at night only, it's very common. If you want to, I can give the name of the practice, I recommend them

I do have an astigmatism and there are serveral tests to detect this condidtion. I would go for a second opinion. If you get toric lenses (which can be more expensive than spherical lenses) to correct an astigmatism that is not there, not only will your vision blur, but you can get some pretty nasty headaches from it.
Plus, an astigmatism is not the end of the world. I do not like that 'It's worse than you think.' no offense but that is a liitle overdramatic given the situation.

I've had this test before. But since you have concerns I think you should deginitely get a second opinion.
ETA: I had the test at an optometrist's office. My opthamalogist does not use this test.
