I don't know about residential life, but there are tons of businesses in Charlotte.

Yes, the Charlotte region has some very nice areas. Your other option is the Raleigh/Durham area - Cary is a popular suburb. If you don't need quite that much business and would consider a more 'vacation-y' atmosphere, you could look around Wilmington or Asheville/Highlands.

Rays sister and her family live near Charlotte. We looked into NC a lot and were considering Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham, or Wilmington.
