Does anyone know if crooked teeth (the need for braces) is hereditary?
I was at one of my inlaws this weekend and their oldest is now in braces. She's the fifth in line of my nieces & nephews on DH's side with braces.
DH's wore braces at one point and I believe the story is, he removed them himself with pliers ...
We have pretty darn great teeth in my family (from a straight perspective) so I'm just wondering if my future children are doomed to braces ...

Umm, I think it is... But maybe you'll luck out and they'll get your teeth?!?!
I know that FH and his sister both have the same exact teeth as his mother... They seem to be more narrow than most, it's kinda odd....

It definetly is. My sister has two front teet that are slanted outwards, well my niece lost her baby teeth (that were pretty straight) and her two front teeth have come in at total angles....its the most bizzare think to look at. Its exactly her mothers teeth just extreme.

I'm not sure....I know alot of it has to do with the size of the jaw/mouth...neither of my parents had them and their teeth are fine (my dad has had problems with them-bd gums etc) and I ended up with really crooked teeth and braces, but not my sister

Is it wrong of me to be so bothered that the children I do not have yet are most likely going to have a 'bad bite'?
Maybe I was just surprised at seeing my niece's braces (I didn't know she got them) and looking at her sister knowing she'd need them too and realizing all the kids of age had them.
What causes orthodontic problems?
An orthodontic problem is called a malocclusion, meaning 'bad bite.' Some examples of causes of malocclusion are crowded teeth, extra teeth, missing teeth or jaws that are out of alignment. Most malocclusions are INHERITED, although some can be acquired.

My older one has a gap between his two front permanent teeth like my SIL. If you just saw a picture of their mouths you would think he belonged to her. Besides the fact that they are always together. SO I would say def.
