does anyone know??? medical question nwr

help me!
i got a VM from my dr. office - i have my 'medical clearance exam' tomorrow morning at 10:30, which is basicaly just a physical to make sure i'm healthy enough to have the surgery in 2 weeks. they're not taking blood or anything. but the VM message was to confirm my appt and to remind me not to eat or drink anything for 6 hours beforehand!!

I tried to call back but now they're 'closed' Does this sound right? I thought you only had to fast for certain types of bloodwork? i don't think i can come to work, go for my other test, come back to work, then go to this clearance exam, without eating or drinking anything!!!

Anyone know??? Thanks!

I honestly don't know but definitely try to get some clarification but if for some reason you can't get in contact with them, just don't eat to be safe. Chew some gum or something. Good luck and will be praying for you re: your procedure!

Its probably worth it to just skip breakfast anyway and not eat anything after you go to bed so that you have the 6 hours before your appt.

If you'd rather get clarification, you should call Dr. and get their answering service?

it was the most obnoxious voice message - it was like 'dial xx for medical emergencies only, REPEAT - MEDICAL EMERGENCIES ONLY'

I am afraid what they might do to me.

I definitely won't eat breaekfast it's honestly just coffee i will have a problem with. and water i guess.

Anytime I've had surgery, the medical clearance included bloodwork. I would bet that's what they're going to do. Otherwise I don't see why you'd need to fast at all.

I had the bloodwork a week and a half ago... that's why i'm confused. i'm thinking maybe they don't know that - BUT - I did fax them the results, which they had asked me to do before I came in.

HMMM.. I had to have a sonogram a few months ago and I couldn't eat or drink anything for 8 hours, but I had to drink plenty of water for 12 hours, but couldn't drink any for the last hour before the sonogram... then they finally let me pee (yea, wasn't allowed to) so they could do an internal.

I had to have another sono 2 weeks ago... I did the whole fasting thing and drinking water, just to walk in and the tech was like 'you can release your bladder, we're only doing internal'

anywho- do you have to have a sono done?? are you sure you don't have to have blood work done??

Maybe urinalysis or some kind of exercise they're going to have you do? Maybe the people that called you weren't aware that the bloodwork was done so they are following standard operating procedure, since most pre-op patients need the bloodwork? I don't know but I wouldn't have any unnecessary bloodwork bc I hate needles lol

I don't know what kind of surgery your having but the only thing I can think of that you might need to fast for is and abdominal sonogram or a stress test (for cardiac clearance). You do not need to fast for any urine tests, or EKGs. And your basic medical clearance is a urine analysis including UCG (to makesure you're not pregnant), and EKG, and some basic bloodwork like a complete blood count and a basic metabolic panel, and a general physical. You only might need more if you have any underlying medical issues.
