I live in a 2-family, my mother-in-law lives downstairs and we live in the apartment upstairs. While I see her more often than 'normal' it hasn't been too bad. We set boundaries (call before visiting, eating separately, etc...) and try to stay by them. I usually do see her every day though (commute together sometimes, doing laundry in the basement I have to go through her apartment). But the benefit far outways the negatives ... she's a widow and I like that we are close to her. She doesn;t want a stranger in her house right now. We live rent free (our wedding present) and have access to the washer/dryer. If either one runs out of a staple, we can easily borrow from one another... I call it shopping at 'Stop & Rita' when I run out of eggs or oil. It's a good thing for us - we make good money and right now we can bank an entire salary plus a portion of another salary right now ... that's HUGE for us. When we look for a house I don't know if she'll stay where she is or she will move with us (mother-daughter of course). We never want to co-habitate but I am comfortable having her close to us.

I do and it's a lot better than I thought it would be. His parents and siblings are very respectful of our space and privacy. I'm actually really surprised!
We let his 15-year-old brother hang out in the apartment after school because he walks the dog, but he always goes back upstairs before we get home so that the place is empty when we come home (for some reason that's important to me, it's psychological I suppose )
The only problem is his other brother (he's 21) who moved out right before I moved in. He comes by the house a lot and walks into our place without knocking and I believe he comes into our place when we're not there. It's just to smoke, but the coming-in-without-permission annoys me.
