Re: Does anyone RUN?
i only run if i'm being chased by my cat.....
i don't know how to correctly either.....there is a correct way to do it, because if you see people running (as you drive by them), sometimes you notice they look fluid and other times they're all gangly and odd looking....

Re: Does anyone RUN?
I run on the treadmill. It really helps me to keep a pace. If I ran on my own, I know I would get lazy. I like that I can regulate my speed.

Re: Does anyone RUN?
I run about 5 miles 4 times a week. I started off slowly about 1 mile and walk 1 mile...then gradually built up to where I am now. The Hardest thing for me is to not start too fast...or I have trouble at the end. I run outside in the summer and on the treadmill in the winter. I also watch my time so everytime I run I try to beat my previous days time.
When I started I got some tips from Runnersworld.com. There is a lot of good stuff on there about nutrition and correct form. It also helps you chose the right sneakers.
When I run I keep note of my posture, keep my head up and run heal to ball of foot. I also swing my arms front to back and make sure I keep a light fist.
Good luck...I have been working out for many years now and running is what really helped me lose those extra pounds that I couldn't get rid of.

Re: Does anyone RUN?
i run a lot. i just started a few years ago. i don't really think you can do it wrong but it will take time to build up speed and endurance. i also used to have horrible problems with side cramps when i first started b/c i wasn't breathing properly. runner's world, as someone else mentioned is a great source of info. also the best thing you can do is find a running store that sells sneakers and go there and have them help you pick shoes. the one i went to actually made me run around the store so they could figure out what kind of shoes i needed. if nothing else be sure to buy a half size to a full size bigger than you really need.

I started (and never finished) a really good running program on coolrunning.com
Its called Couch to 5K - really good for beginner runners.

Re: Does anyone RUN?
I also run - on my treadmill - I do it every day - about 4.5 miles a day, I try to vary the speeds. But I love it - it really makes me feel so much better when I'm done!! I hate exercising and this seems to be the only thing I have stuck with - I spent a lot of money on my treadmill and I plan on getting my moneys worth!!!

How long did it take you to build up from 1 mile?

Re: Does anyone RUN?
Only advice I can give is; listen to your body. Know your limits and don't try to exceed them. Start off slow and PACE yourself. If you start off running too fast, you'll get tired very easily.

Re: Does anyone RUN?
I don't know if Jenny2Penny can back me up on this because she seems to be our resident fitness guru, but I used to run 4 miles a day and I found it really took a toll on my knees. Now I really cant run much at all. I started working out in a gym and found that running really wasn't a complete work out and there were all these other parts of my body that I wasn't working at all - I was so surprised that you could be thin and be able to run, but still be totally out of shape. Now I stick to all low impact.

I would say I increased my distance every few weeks...and about a year or so to really go the distance I can go today at a decent spead.
